Fix Disk Read Error in Your Computer

A computer sometimes fails to boot with disk read error. This error appears when the computer starts. A black screen appears with the following text:

“An error occurred reading the disk. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart.”

As instructed in the error message, restarting the computer usually does not resolve the problem. This article contains simple and easy to follow instructions to fix disk read error on PC.

1. Customize CMOS settings

2. Load CMOS configuration defaults

3. Replace the data/power cables

4. Scan and repair the OS Registry

5. Check for disk errors

6. Disinfect the computer with a rescue disk

Customize CMOS settings

CMOS settings contain primary configurations required to boot your system and control how the hardware works.

Disk read error occurs when the CMOS settings fail to recognize your hard drive. In other words the computer is unable to detect it and/or the operating system that is installed on it. Customize CMOS settings to fix this problem.

1. Restart the machine.

2. Press F2 or Delete repeatedly.

3. Go to the Disks menu.

4. Scroll down using the keyboard and select Hard Disk Drive.

5. Select the hard drive that contains the Windows operating system installed.

6. Scroll up and go to the Boot menu.

7. Scroll down and select the Boot Sequence option.

8. Put the following sequence-

First boot device – Hard disk

Second, third boot devices – Disabled

9. Scroll up and select the Exit menu and then Save settings and exit.

10. The computer will restart itself without showing the above error message.

Load CMOS configuration defaults

Problems with CMOS settings cause disk read error. The best option to deal with this problem is to restore the default settings.

1. Load the CMOS settings in the same way as shown above.

2. Go to the Exit menu, select Restore Defaults.

3. Select Exit | Save settings and exit.

Replace the data/power cables

Disk data/power cords may be loose. Failure to transfer data leads to such errors. Turn off your computer. Check internal installations, etc. If the problem persists, replace the data/power cables on your hard drive.

Scan and repair the OS Registry

The operating system registry is a collection of all PC configurations. Recent registry changes may have caused your computer to display the disk read error. Scan and repair the Windows Registry as shown below:

1. Turn on your computer.

2. Press the F8 key, select the Safe Mode with networking option.

3. Press ENTER.

4. Download an efficient system/registry optimizer software.

5. Start the full Registry scan.

6. Repair all detected errors.

Check for disk errors

A disk read error occurs when your computer is unable to read data from the disk. System files, settings and user data recovery fail due to bad disk. Bad sectors are the reasons for this error message. Check your hard drive for errors. Here’s how to do it:

1. Reboot your computer into safe mode.

2. Double-click the My Computer desktop icon.

3. Right-click on the system drive (the drive where your OS is installed).

4. Select Properties.

5. Click Tools | Check Now from the new dialog box.

6. Check Automatically fix file system errors and click Start from the confirmation dialog.

Disinfect the computer with a rescue disk

The most common reason behind disk reading problem is virus infection. Your computer may have fallen victim to a virus/malware. Viruses overwrite system files with malicious content.

1. Use another working computer to download a rescue disk from the Internet. (Use widely available freeware)

3. Burn the contents of the rescue disc to a blank DVD ROM disc.

4. Insert it into your broken computer and reboot.

5. Load CMOS settings. Set your DVD ROM as the first boot device; and Hard Disk as the second boot device. Save settings and exit. (For detailed instructions, please refer to the previous paragraphs for details).

6. The computer will restart itself.

7. When prompted to press a button, follow the on-screen instructions. The computer will boot into a Linux-based environment and the antivirus will scan and remove infected system files.

8. When you are done removing the infected files, please close the Linux based rescue disk system.

9. Remove your drive, set First Boot Device as Hard Drive using CMOS Settings.

10. Boot Windows safely.

11. Insert the Windows installation disc. Press Windows Key + R, type SFC /SCANNOW, and then click OK.
