KIKAOO an Evening of Poetry, Storytelling and Music
At the Kenya National Theatre’s Wasanii Restaurant, the first thing you notice when you enter the auditorium where KIKAOO is located is the look of utter relaxation etched on everyone’s face as they turn to welcome the new arrival. It just started and you walked in just in time to hear the beautiful lady introduce herself, with a sweet, sultry voice, like Leez. She gives a short introduction to KIKAOO because she notices a lot of new faces.
KIKAOO is a Swahili word, literally translated into English as “forum” and as the name suggests it is a home and a melting pot for talents, a laboratory and space for developing, testing and merging new forms and techniques, unique and different art. Those who are just starting out have a chance to grow with KIKAOO and those who are old in the art scene are not left out. It brings together artists and art lovers and creates a relaxing environment for everyone to be themselves and discover their innermost selves. It can best be described as an evening of poetry, storytelling, music and all things art.
KIKAOO, which is a program of Artist Forum International AFI, has hosted over 1,600 artists on its stage since its inception on June 6, 2008. Gender equality stands at a ratio of 60:40, the participation of female artists to that of male artists. and almost the same is reflected in the audience attendance. The total number of audience attendance is over 7,000.
The KIKAOO stage has hosted music groups such as: AZIZA, an Afro-fusion boy band. The group was discovered on KIKAOO in 2008 and celebrated their first anniversary in mid-2009 on KIKAOO. Since then the group has been a regular guest; INKA, a music group recently discovered on KIKAOO; ELANI is another band that performs on KIKAOO. The group consists of two young ladies and two gentlemen and is a complete team of talented individuals who have found the rhythm and have not let it go. They are blessed with beautiful voices that blend well with the musical instruments creating a romantic soulful ambience; FADHILI and NIMO, a couple of university students, whose version of the Kenya National Anthem is the unofficial anthem adopted by KIKAOO; LULU, the best thing to ever happen to the Kenyan music scene, a young male musician with a voice that doesn’t need to be amplified, Bongo Music World style lyricist – the artist to watch in the coming year; ABLAZE POET, group of poems; OHANGLAMAN MAKADEM, the musician behind the popular song “Obama be your name”; SAM ONDIEKI of TWAFF Records; PEDAGOGIES; DODO, to name just some of the musical talent that has graced the KIKAOO stage.
Poetry is the essence of KIKAOO and has given many poets the courage needed to perfect their art. Poetry speaks to us in many ways; through it are shared the experiences of the life we go through, the hopes and expectations of a people and the dreams of many exposed souls. The founding father of Artist Forum International, the brain child behind the KIKAOO program never disappoints in churning out great African poetry, inspiring charming love poems and hilarious folkloric poetry, one of which is “The Witch Contests”, a story told on good end by the poet. , Poet J. DEJUOLS Ambbaassaah be his name. More poets in KIKAOO include GRAND MASTER MASESE, MOSES MANN- DHAHABU, CHRIS ADWAR, TRACY WAMBUI, MAMA HIDAYA-EUNICE NJAMBI, PAULINA MTOTO MZURI, MO CREATIVE!, SAID OMAR SAID among others.
In the spirit of promoting all things art, movie presentations are not outside the scope of KIKAOO. KIKAOO was privileged to host the presentation of the Multi Media University students’ film: “EXPOSED”. The film was then screened at the Kenya International Film Festival. In addition, KIKAOO recognizes the need for society to have a forum to discuss relevant issues facing the community. To this end, KIKAOO, together with and hosted by the Pen International Kenya Chapter, conducted a series of readings of Michela Wrong’s controversial book about John Githongo’s exposés on the corruption that takes place within the corridors of power “It’s Our Turn to Eat”. The book is said to have been shunned by bookstores out of fear that they will be sued for libel as has happened before. Thus, in filling the gap KIKAOO remains the voice of the masses and a place to vent positively.
