How to Install Car Speakers

All cars have their own unique type of car speaker installation problems, although installing speakers is a relatively simple process. Most speaker installations can be completed in about an hour or less. Installation complexity will vary depending on the vehicle. And again, depending on the vehicle, the speakers can be installed on the dash, doors or rear deck.

Most importantly, remember that safety must be considered when installing speakers. Damage can be caused by not installing the speakers correctly – this can lead to additional costs and even possible damage. Hearing/vision protection should be used as needed.

Here are the basic steps to consider for installing speakers. Remember, some vehicles may require additional steps. Although the location of the speakers in your vehicle may differ from the mounting locations mentioned here, the method should be comparable.

For dash and door speaker installation, you will need to check if the vehicle has removable speaker grilles. If they can be removed, remove the grilles using the appropriate tools, remove the screws holding the speaker inside, disconnect the speaker harness that was attached to the speaker, connect the speaker harness to the new speaker, insert the speaker harness that was connected to the new speaker to the harness in the car, place the speaker in the opening and reinstall using the mounting screws, replace the grille and repeat with the other speaker. If you install speakers in the door, make sure that the depth of the speaker does not interfere with the operation of the window after installation.

If the shutters cannot be removed, the plates or possibly the door panel will need to be removed. Be sure to keep an eye on any screws/clips removed if this is the case. Next, follow the same steps as above except you will need to reinstall the door pads/panel. If you remove the door panel, be aware that the screws may be mounted in the armrest or inside the door seal and may be behind the trim panels. Once all the screws are removed from the panel, lift it up so you can disconnect any electrical harnesses.

If you are installing rear deck speakers, you need to determine if the speakers are top or bottom mounted, as this will determine your steps. If mounted high, remove the grilles, remove the screws holding the speaker in, disconnect the speaker harness, connect the harness to the new speaker, insert the harness connected to the speaker to the vehicle side of the harness, place the new speaker in the opening and mount with screws , switch the grille and repeat with the other speaker.

If the speakers are mounted underneath, reach into the trunk and remove the screws that mount the speaker. Then follow the same basic steps as above.

Finally, you will need to turn on the radio and check the operation of the new speakers.
