Ancient Indian Education and Ethics – Its Relevance Today
We are here to critically understand the importance of ancient Indian education system in modern times. He helped the ethos of modern education to understand the Indian society. Do we want to become original thinkers again, or stay in the current system that breeds mediocrity? India needs to think hard about how much the foreign education system has helped her. It is time to go back to a high level of education that will produce thinkers.
The foundation of Indian education was learning and understanding. After countless invasions, it became mere memorization. India was the richest nation in the world in ancient times. It believed in using only as much natural resources as was needed. Overexploitation of natural resources was neither practiced nor encouraged. In India, people worship nature: plants, wind, fire, water, sun and so on. This shows the respect it paid to all living plants and animals on Earth. In the Hindu religion, it is said that excessive use of the sea should be avoided and this is known as “samudramanthan”. Education was considered a noble work, a solemn duty of the teacher, and he should not expect reward from the students. The teacher used to be dedicated and took teaching as a mission.
Academics also helped reform societies. We might recall the contribution of the great teacher of economics at Takshashila and Nalanda universities; Chankaya who realized that for economic development in the region it was necessary to create an undivided nation: India. He helped Chandragupta establish the Mauryan Empire, which ruled the entire subcontinent and beyond. This empire in recent times gave a system that gave us the ethical standards that Indians cherish even now. The educational standards were high and people came from far away countries to study all streams of subjects here in India. Indians also worship the goddess of education “Saraswati”. Even today it is celebrated with great fanfare.
Hindus have a function where a child is introduced to learning and that is the culture of India. Indian society is based on education. People in education have the highest position in the society called Brahmins. In ancient times, one had to work very hard to become a Brahmin. In those days it was not from birth. One had to accept this calling and only then could one become a Brahmin. Brahmins could not take money for education. Education in ancient India was free for all. The kingdom would fund education. India is a country with low literacy but high education. People know about life, nature, plants and their importance and so on.
The Indian education system was based on the principle of total development; mind and emotions. The Indian system laid great emphasis on the development of the ethical sole and therefore introduced the brahmacharya system. During this period, the student is only supposed to learn. The Indian system emphasized learning by doing. It was really based on religious practices and religious acts. It must be remembered that religion at that time was just a way of life and therefore did not conflict with education. Man had to follow a strict way of life, which he still has to follow. Athavaveda an ancient book talks in detail about the educational part; system and methods to be followed.
However, it had some flaws. Education was limited to those who deserved it and was not available to all. Second, it was guru (teacher) oriented, i.e. one had to rely on the guru for every thing and his knowledge was considered perfect. Buddhism democratized education by making it possible for everyone to study. This helped to expand education and institutionalize education through the creation of universities. Buddhism did not deviate from the Hindu system of imparting education but made it broad based. Here, too, educators and students had to be religious and had to follow strict rules. Even here he was not entirely without the old Guru system. Even the Buddha said “Buddham saranam gachchami” (Come to the Buddha for enlightenment). Realize that in ancient times, the great saints themselves researched and developed a body of knowledge that contradicted what the Buddha said. However, he questioned the system of concentration of knowledge in a few hands. This may have reduced the quality of knowledge, but it has improved the understanding of the people of India in general.
It also created a bond between the people of India that holds the country together. This is the secret of India’s unity in diversity. A diverse country became one population with the same principle of life, which is the attainment of moksha (eternal bliss).
Indians have always placed great emphasis on education, which was supposed to improve the ethical standard of the population. The resilience of the ancient Indian education system has been proven time and again. From the early stages of foreign invasion, India lost all its material wealth but not the Indian ethos and superiority of our (Aryan) culture and faith. This was made possible by the establishment of the Indian education system. Others talk about ethics, but Indians practice through education.
The objectives of the Indian system, I believe, were:
1. The direct aim was to prepare all students to become useful members of society, so that they could faithfully discharge the duties of all the other Ashrams of life.
2. The aim was to create a strong and good character through moral values.
3. The Indian education system distinguished between mere scholarship and total education.
4. The goal of the system was the development of the overall personality.
5. Next was the inculcation of civic and social duties. India in ancient times was a society that was governed primarily by social laws that empowered us. It is the only society where the social system of business was so strong and independent that we survived despite foreign invasion and rule.
6. Indian education promoted social efficiency and happiness. We all know that there are examples of people helping society in our old books.
7. The ancient education system taught the preservation of national heritage and culture, therefore we still have a culture different from all other societies. This still remains our strength and one day we will be able to restore our national pride. This gave us unbroken continuity from ancient times. Our survival as a nation is the strength of our ancient education.
Then the question is, where did we go wrong? Our education system was closed in a shell because it had to be protected from foreign influence. This violent massacre of our culture by foreign invaders has made us extremely introverted. The openness of our society has disappeared and formal education has become the domain of few. This has destroyed the ability of our academic community to expand knowledge. The burning of our established educational centers has frightened people. Masa lost her desire to learn because she did not value domestic knowledge. People have moved away from the formal learning process and this has given way to all kinds of raw practices in our society. Indian society has lost its basic ability to acquire and utilize knowledge. A body of knowledge became foreign, a rare commodity that only the rich could afford. British rule took advantage of this void and introduced a system that suited the needs of the Empire. The system did not prompt for further copying. This practice is still prevalent in the Indian education system. It discourages the boy from having his own independent opinion on the matter.
We stopped learning and all our old texts were considered part of religion. We should redesign our education system to incorporate the core ethos of our time tested old system with new knowledge. We need to reintroduce the concept of self-control that exists in our society. This allows our people to appreciate the need for ethical standards. Yes, let’s go back to the relationship that existed between education and society as defined by our time-honored system. The quality of some books written 2500 years ago or later is so high that people today cannot write. That was the level of our original research, why and when we lost this ability is still of interest now. We need to revive it and rebuild the education system in India as we want it; overall development. Copying the West did not help and will not help in the future, that must be recognized once and for all. We believe in the company’s ethical values and these cannot be discounted at any cost. Society has lost thousands of years and let’s not waste any more time in finding the right education for India.
