Mahakavi Subrahmanya Bharathi,The Great Tamil Poet Recognised As National Poet: A Brief Introduction

Mahakavi Subhramania Bharathi (11.12.82-11.9.21) or simply Bharathi was a modern Tamil poet recognized as the National Poet of India. He met Sister Nivedita, a disciple of Swami Vivekananda as his mentor. He was a contemporary of Bengali poet Rabindra Nath Tagore. He had great respect for Madame Annie Besant and a follower of Bala Gangadhar Thilak. He worked along with extreme group members like VOCHidambaram Pillai and Subramaniyam Siva. He lived alternately in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. His poems are broadly classified as 1. Devotional songs 2. Patriotic songs 3. Biographical songs 4. Short narratives and 5. General songs. This article is a humble attempt to introduce this great poet to readers who want to know more about him.

Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi, as a worshiper of UNIVERSAL ENERGY.

“I saw a tiny spark and kept it safe in a hole in a tree in a dense forest,

LOOK! The whole forest was reduced to ashes.

Is there any difference in fire as new born or old?

Thatththarikita thaththarikita thatththom”

– So dances the poet Subhramania Bharathi, in praise of Agni (fire), one of the five elements of the universe, who sang in praise of several Hindu gods in a manner unique to him. Nowadays, in almost all school prayers, his songs about the gods are translated to invoke the blessings of the Almighty.

Bharathi found special respect and reverence for fire in his poems, even in the worship of the Almighty. Although he wrote poems about Hindu male gods such as Krishna and Muruga, his description of the Goddess of Power is unique.

He envisioned the goddess Shakthi as the supreme cosmic energy. He often danced merrily and praised the cosmic energy as:

“Let us praise the Mahasakthi (cosmic energy) who created the entire universe,

It is hidden in the great five elements that make up the EARTH,

She is the source of all movement, speed

And all the attractive forces on earth,

It is the strength of our lives and is the food that men take to live

“Wherever you see it merges and finally collapses into only Shakthi”

this concept is similar to the concept of “singularity” in science.

In addition to Hindu deities, he sang the praises of Jesus Christ, Islam also in its usual way. He was a lover of space with a special regard for the homeland of Bharath in which he lived. He called her Bharathamatha (Mother Bharath) and sang “vandhe mahadalam” (Praise of my motherland). The phrase Vandhe Madharam had a magical effect on the Indian freedom fighters and several freedom fighters sacrificed their lives holding the tricolor close to their chests and raising this magical slogan till their last breath when they were attacked by the British soldiers. Alas! the modern Indian youth needs to be reminded of the supreme sacrifice made by the young freedom fighters at that time to free themselves from foreign rule.

Patriotic Songs:

Poet Bharathi always liked to compare India’s freedom struggle to the war of the Mahabharath, the great Indian epic. For him the British rulers were the Kauravas and the Indian freedom fighters were the Pandavas. He had a penchant for an extreme approach, while the Gandhis preferred passive non-violence. That is why we could see his direct disapproval of non-violent struggle in his songs. He said:

“My heart does not tolerate these baseless people who fear everything” in a melancholic mood as a direct reference to the moderates and those who were indifferent to the violent struggle. However, his respect for Mahatma Gandhi, an advocate of passive non-violence, was unique. He compared him to God and says:

“Mahatmaji, you are the savior of Bharath, who was under the grip of poverty, ignorance and so low, and thus the land was ruined. You have come as the savior of this land. Long life to you, Mahatma Ji!”

He was deeply in favor of the armed struggle for freedom and his leaders were Bal Gangadhara Thilak, Guru Gobindsingh, Dadabhai naoroji, Lala Lajpath Rai, VOChidambaram Pillai who all supported the armed struggle.

Bharathi was also deeply impressed by leaders from abroad. He vowed to win freedom for India on behalf of Mazzini, the founding leader of YOUNG ITALY.

He sang elegies about the fall of BELGIUM in the First World War.

But what brought him fame on the international stage was his song about the Russian Revolution.

“Mahakali (goddess of strength and cosmic energy) set her sights on Russia,

The revolution had its stunning rise for ages to come!

The Russian tyrant has fallen.”

He compared the tyrant to the Puranic monster Hiranyana and the revolution to the goddess of power. The Goddess Power conquered him and turned him into ashes

‘Bharath’ from Bharatha’s Dreams:

“We will follow the tops of the silvery hills

We will send our ships to the deep western seas,

We will build schools in all temples and

We will proudly say that we are Bharathias (Indians).

We will build a bridge across the sea to Srilanka (Ceylon)

We will connect the two by wide roads,

By using the flooded waters of the eastern rivers

We will irrigate on the central platform

We will have our own guns, make papers,

We will develop Industries develop education

We never rest, nor bow our heads

We will defend the Truth and show our mite.”

Poets are of different types. Some write poems for money. Some poets write poems out of their immense love for the motherland and the magnificent nature and the Almighty. Such poets who write appreciative of nature have a natural insight and what they write in advance will come true in later years.

We can see that whatever Bharathi wrote in the above poem a hundred years ago has now come true. India has shown progress on all fronts especially in science and space technology that India has already sent its satellite which has landed on the moon and another one is expected to land on the moon in the next six months.

His views on women’s liberation:

He has a special place in the role of Honor for great poets, while considering a woman His views on conjugal fidelity are very well known and quoted everywhere when the subject is discussed:

“When the question of sexual morality arises, let us leave it common to both sexes,” he declared, when women were treated as slaves. His view on the education of women is also noteworthy.

Walk with an upright posture, look with straight eyes,

Fear no one on earth for morals,

Superiority through impeccable knowledge,

All this belongs to the modern woman”

Such women are known as Bharathi’s New Age woman.

Bharathi’s poems are like an ocean. One cannot go through the entire content in a short time. At least a glass of his poetry was given as above. If it makes the readers interested to go through the entire writing, then the purpose of this article is fulfilled.
