Driving, Golf, Family and More in 12 Days

ClubCorp is a Dallas, Texas-based corporation with 170 privately owned business and sports clubs, country clubs, golf courses and golf resorts worldwide from Seattle to Mexico and from Boston to Beijing. In addition to your local ClubCorp membership, ClubCorp offers different levels of membership. We are members and actively participate in one of the memberships offered called Signature Gold Unlimited. This private club benefit includes a complimentary two rounds of golf and two meals at participating dining clubs. We can experience two free rounds of golf per club in 30 days. We only pay a cart fee, which is usually $17 to $36 each. We can request tee times 30 days in advance. In addition, we can experience two free great meals at participating dining clubs, two in 30 days. We only pay tax, tip and alcohol. There are other perks, but we mainly use golf and dining.

Does that sound too good? We even added the use of one hotel chain that offers stay incentives to the savings. We mainly use Choice Hotels. They offer extra points when you use their credit card and give extra points if you stay a certain number of times.

First we set an itinerary; we then emailed the travel information to ClubLine. It is always a pleasure to work with the knowledgeable and friendly ClubLine staff.

Here are a few things to consider before you start planning to maximize your Signature Gold Unlimited usage. Many of the dining clubs are only open from Thursday to Saturday evenings; however, most are open Monday through Friday for lunch. Dinner Clubs require a special dress code. Some of the golf clubs are closed on Mondays.

Every year we travel to the northeast for a family visit. We add ClubCorp experiences to our trip on the way back. Here is our latest trip:

Day 1: Long day drive to Smithfield, NC. Stayed at the Sleep Inn and Suites

(Next time we should stop in Charleston or Hilton Head Island first to shorten the first day of driving.)

Day 2: Golf at the Neuse Golf Club in Clayton, NC about 20 minutes from the Smithfield Hotel. After golf, we stayed at the Quality Suites in Cary, NC for two nights. This Quality Suites hotel hosts a manager’s reception on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., which includes complimentary beer and wine with hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants. It’s great to relax after a long day and then go out for dinner nearby. You can actually walk to about 3-4 restaurants. Great for stretching your legs after a car ride.

Day 3: Golf at Devils Ridge Golf Course in Holly Springs, North Carolina about 20 minutes from the Cary Hotel. We had dinner at the Capital City Club, one of our favorites in Raleigh. We miss the Cardinal Club because it stopped dining. Cardinal Club only does breakfast and lunch. Devils Ridge Golf Course was in great shape.

Day 4: Golf at Lochmere Golf Club. We are sorry, but this course was in poor condition on this visit. We went to Williamsburg, VA. and stayed at the Governor’s Inn in Colonial Williamsburg. We had dinner at Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill. Every visit to this restaurant is a must for us.

Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill – Voted by locals as “Best Seafood Restaurant” in Williamsburg for over a decade, Berret’s offers two dining options in one convenient location. The restaurant specializes in regional seafood prepared according to traditional and contemporary recipes, an extensive wine list and local beers.

The Taphouse Grill focuses on the hard-to-find and unique foods, wines, beers, music and art of modern Virginia. This casual outdoor setting has been a popular gathering place for locals, College of William and Mary students and visitors to the historic area for the past two decades.

Day 5: Tour Williamsburg and visit the Wythe House, which had visitors like Patrick Henry, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. We were at Colonial Williamsburg the day the “Declaration of Independence” was read at the Capital Building. It was very emotional to think how the ancestors must have felt that day. When in Williamsburg, you must visit one of the taverns. We stopped at Chowning’s Tavern.

Chowning’s Tavern – Josiah Chowning opened his tavern in 1766 and appealed to the “common sort”. Popular tradition holds that the modern sandwich originated in the 18th century and was named after John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. Today’s diners can enjoy a freshly prepared lunch of stews and sandwiches served by friendly staff.

En route to New Jersey via Maryland. I stayed at the Sleep Inn in Salisbury, MD and had an excellent dinner at Vinny’s LaRoma in Salisbury, MD. The restaurant was recommended by the hotel staff.

Go to Vinny’s La Roma and enjoy truly authentic Salisbury Italian cuisine. Don’t forget to say “Hi” to Vinny!

Day 6: We had a day traveling around Maryland shopping and walking around St Michaels, Maryland. We had lunch at the Town Dock Restaurant at 125 Mulberry Street, St Michaels, MD.

Town Dock Restaurant’s menu offers fresh seafood, premium meats, poultry and vegetarian specialties in a relaxing setting overlooking the water on three sides. Town-Dock offers a seafood buffet on Friday nights and brunch on Sundays.

I stopped in Lambertville, NJ and had dinner at the Lambertville Station Restaurant and Inn, an old favorite and one of my first dates with my husband.

Lamberville Station Restaurant – Enjoy the natural tranquility of the Delaware River while dining in a meticulously restored historic train station dating back to 1867. The Station’s New American Cuisine features signature dishes such as Chesapeake Jumbo Crab Cakes, Dijon-Rosemary Coated Rack of Lamb and rare Ahi-tuna with Wasabi puree, as well as wild game and seasonal offers served and prepared by professional and friendly staff.

We arrived at our destination in New Jersey to spend time with the children and grandchildren.

Day 7, 8: Family days.

Day 9: Journey home. Stopped at Tyson’s Corner in Vienna, VA for a ClubCorp lunch. I stayed at the Comfort Inn in Midlothian (Richmond), VA.

Day 10: Golf at Stonehedge Golf and Country Club, Midlothian, VA about 10 minutes from hotel. After golfing, he drove to the Comfort Suites in Clayton, NC. We were supposed to travel to Fayetteville. But. we were tired.

Day 11: Traveled to Savannah, GA and walked around. Too bad the weather was very, very hot and humid. We arrived early for dinner at the First City Club of Savannah. Stop by the bar in the club and talk to Tracy the bartender. We had fun chatting with Tracy and enjoyed a drink somewhere around 5 o’clock. After dinner we checked into the Comfort Suites in Bluffton, SC.

Day 12: Golf at Golden Bear Club at Indigo Run, Hilton Head Island, SC. The course was in great shape. Then we went HOME.

Summary: In 12 days, we drove 2,685 miles, played golf at 5 ClubCorp golf clubs, enjoyed free meals at 3 ClubCorp clubs, stayed at 5 different Choice Hotels, and listened to 3 books on tape. We also had several free Choice hotel stays with our points from previous trips.

And to top it all off, we enjoyed a family visit. Great trip!
