Knowing When Depression Postpartum Hits
Giving birth to a baby can be one of the most beautiful moments in a woman’s life, but it is also very stressful and involves a lot of anxiety. Most new mothers go through these feelings and it is said to be postpartum depression. Some of the symptoms or signs of this depression are sleep problems, curiosity, anxiety, frustration, wrong eating habits or less appetite, fear of handling and raising the child in the future, etc. These natural feelings sometimes make mothers think that they are they don’t deserve to be mothers. These feelings become more active especially after three to four days after giving birth. These baby blues only last for a few weeks and cannot be labeled as any kind of illness or disease. These things do not need any medical treatment and it also does not mean that the mother stops caring for the child.
Postpartum depression
However, if these depressions last longer or more than two weeks, then it is called postpartum depression (PPD). Some of the new mothers face this problem. This thing doesn’t only happen with the first delivery, it exists with other deliveries as well. This PPD also affects and disrupts the mother-child relationship.
Postnatal depression is another name for postpartum depression. It is basically a medical condition that affects women in general, but it also affects men at times. It affects women during the first months of pregnancy. Some of the problems that expectant mothers face are emptiness, anxiety, fatigue, sadness, irregular appetite, sleep disorders, decreased libido, irritability, speech problems, low self-esteem, feelings of guilt, etc.
Factors causing PDD
Some of the hormonal changes in the mother after the baby is born are some of the causes of PDD. Some blame it on a lack of vitamins. Some of the other things that cause PDD are a history of depression and stress, smoking, less social support, anxiety about child care, marital problems and incompatibility, financially weak, divorced or single parenthood, unwanted or unplanned pregnancy, problems related to the child , the child doesn’t turn out the way the mother expected, leading the mother to think she didn’t do enough for her child.
There are women who have PDD without these symptoms. PDD should not be taken lightly. If the mother is not treated in time, the situation can worsen. There is also a chance that the mother will become aggressive and violent.
How to treat PDD
PDD should not be taken lightly and must be treated early. Measures such as proper nutrition, behavioral therapy and counseling sessions, adequate sleep, and support from family and relatives would be helpful. Medicines should also be given if necessary. There are very good chances of recovery if treatment is done in the early stages. These people can be treated at home, but if the cases are severe, they should be taken to hospital. For severe cases or those in advanced stages, a therapy called electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be used.
