Pinafores and Sailor Suits – The History of Children’s Fashion

In days gone by, there was no such thing as a specific fashion for children. Little boys and girls were dressed like their fathers and mothers from the time they could walk.

Children’s clothing corresponded to the world of adult fashion down to the last detail. Until the early eighteenth century, children were dressed according to their station in life and looked like miniatures of their parents.

Oil paintings from the time show wealthier families dressed in their best clothes. The sons wore fancy velvet suits with a lace collar, and the daughters wore elaborate dresses with layers of fancy silk. The richer you were, the more silk you wanted to show off. People from poorer backgrounds wore simpler clothing of coarser cloth, including wool, cotton and linen, or well-worn handkerchiefs.

With the dawn of the industrial revolution came the production of plenty of affordable cotton and clothing became roomier and more comfortable. This was true for both adults and children. Finally, people could move around more easily while performing their daily tasks. Boys and girls could run and play with much more freedom. They were no longer weighed down by heavy coarse materials. Society and fashion were much more relaxed.

In the Regency, Victorian and Edwardian eras, long before the advent of washing machines, girls wore pinafores and capes to protect their clothes from getting dirty. Dress for attending a party, church service or wedding required a highly decorated pinafore, complete with lace and embroidery. Everyday aprons were plain and unadorned. Boys can be dressed in a navy suit with a large collar.

Although clothing and fabrics were becoming less restrictive, young ladies and gentlemen still wore styles that evoked adult fashion. The girls wore dresses made of white calico, dotted swiss, muslin, and a yellow cloth called Nankeen, which was imported from China. The empire line was in vogue, with high cut bodices worn with briefs. This style was usually made of muslin and was pulled together with a sash or ribbon just below the bust.

In the era of romanticism, passports began to decline again. The dress boasted fur trims, frills and frills. This new look was topped off with elaborately decorated hats and caps. Still, the young ladies were dressed to look like mini adults, while their brothers could be found wearing the infamous Little Lord Fauntleroy suit.

All women and girls wore long dresses, but in the early 19th century younger women began to shorten their skirts. If you were seventeen or eighteen, you were considered a young lady and your skirts were as long as the ground. A sixteen-year-old’s skirt would be ankle-length, while a fourteen-year-old’s would graze the calf. The twelve-year-old enjoyed the freedom of a dress cut just below the knees. Boys ran around in short pants or knickers until they reached adulthood and accompanied by long pants.

In the 1840s, all women, regardless of age, wore crinoline-style shirts, pushed to the limit with starched petticoats, reinforced with horsehair. A little later, lighter crinolines with hoops made of wire became all the rage.

Because a sudden breeze could blow up the skirt and, horror or horror, expose the leg, pantaloons were invented. These roomy pants with long legs made of linen or cotton did the trick. Very soon they became a fashion statement in their own right, decorated as if with frilled white lace. This was the beginning of underwear that was made to be seen.

Gradually, the crinoline and petticoat began to move from the front to the back and developed into an adult business. Around this time, fashion for little girls began to take on a style of its own. Young ladies preferred long dresses with a waist that hung over a false pleated skirt.

In the early 1880s, girls wore much slimmer cuts, dresses that tied around the waist over a low sash. This style was the forerunner of the signature pocket blouse styles that came with the Edwardian era.

Children’s clothing gradually began to live a life of its own. More and more people began to travel and this fact had a great influence on fashion. Tartan became extremely popular as a useful and good-looking fabric, especially for kilts and school uniforms.

As more and more families moved to the seaside for their annual summer vacation, nautical styles gained in popularity. Both girls’ and boys’ clothes had large navy collars with rows of knit trim. These styles continued through the late Edwardian and Victorian eras. Quartermaster jackets with a quill created a false front that did not require a shirt underneath.

These early trends in children’s fashion continue to gain momentum. Today, our children and grandchildren can dress to suit their every whim. From the moment they are born, parents and friends shower them with the latest designs. As they move through the lower grades and on to high school, kids are bombarded with shows, movies, and commercials starring kids their own age that they desperately want to emulate.

As trends come and go these days, parents are left scrambling to keep up. The latest clothes can be expensive, and if you have two or three children, it can be quite a burden on the wallet. One solution is to avoid malls and specialty stores and shop online. There are many online wholesale clothing sites that specialize in wholesale children’s clothing and designer designer clothing. You are sure to find unique designer fashion that will please your child and your wallet.
