Race Drivers: Overcoming The Fear Of Marketing Yourself

Fear.

Fear can be a very dysfunctional and harmful thing. I have experienced this many times in my life and career. Fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of being ridiculed or even ridiculed. Fear of failure. Fear of doing something new on your own. Fear of not doing something right. Fear of rejection.

As racing drivers, you strap yourself into a very powerful machine that goes at high speed against other determined drivers with powerful machines—and at any time you can crash, flip upside down, catch fire and possibly injure yourself. Those who don’t understand sometimes think you’re crazy, right? But YOU can put that FEAR out of your head every week and tackle the task – why? Because you LOVE to race. It’s your passion. Banish fear from your mind because you are confident in what you are doing and determined to win.

When it comes to marketing and promotion, a lot of racing drivers tell me they don’t want to do it because they just get rejected and rejected by potential sponsors, so they give up. Or they hired people to do it for them with little or no results. Or they just don’t know how. This leads to a constant financial struggle to keep the races going every week. Then your passion can be stressful and frustrating at times.

I understand where you are coming from! I know what it’s like to have a passion for something and you want to continue it or get to the next step – but you’re just stuck – and you’re afraid that if you try and fail, you’ll be worse off than before. That’s fear. Fear is what keeps us from succeeding in everything we do.

With marketing and promoting yourself as a rider to fans and sponsors in an attempt to attract funding for your racing – Ask yourself these questions:

Who or what is holding you back?

Don’t know how to start?

Are you afraid of failure?

Don’t understand how marketing works?

Why can’t I race and sponsors find me?

Or are you:

I only like driving and am not interested in marketing.

As much as I try to promote myself, I really can’t get anywhere.

I’m too busy for marketing and promotion – maybe I can find someone to do it for me.

I am too shy and not the outgoing type. I’ll leave the marketing to other people.

I don’t like looking like I’m asking for a gift.

I don’t like to promote myself, I look conceited.

I’m afraid to ask for help because I might look incompetent.

Marketing costs money – I have to put everything I got into a race car.

I don’t have enough confidence in my abilities and no one will want to sponsor me.

This is fear speaking to you. Working against you. It prevents you from moving forward. You need to change your mindset. Just like strapping yourself into that race car to drive to victory and letting go of fear – you need to do the same with marketing. Approach it the same way you race.

Open your mind to learning – to change, to asking for help – to being part of the community and connecting more with your fans – you’ll be surprised how much it starts to come back to you!

You can’t do what you fear and you can’t do what you don’t know. You KNOW you need money to race. You KNOW it takes good sponsors and selling memorabilia to a large fan base. But how do you get it? How to start and go after it?

1.) Change your mindset – approach marketing like you strap on a race – focus on winning and don’t give up. If it fails, fix the problem and try again. Once you get your first sponsor, you’ll get the same excitement you would when you win a race, and it’ll drive you to keep going for more.

2.) Educate yourself. Learn all you can about marketing and promotion, as well as building a better muffler or a better race car setup, get ahead of the competition and gain a marketing edge!

3.) Find Mentors – Find other drivers who have been successful with their marketing and ask for advice, as well as those who are doing well at a certain track or series.

4.) Step away from the racing gear for a few days a week and use your marketing tool like phone, email, social media and real personal contacts.

5.) Dispel negativity and old ideas about marketing, promotion and getting sponsorship – approach it with a positive attitude. Erase the old stuff in your brain and start over.

6.) Just do it. Jump in with both feet – cold water will be comfortable after all! The more you do it, the more it will become part of you and the easier it will be if you make it a routine.

7.) Be creative. Throw things you know you enjoy into marketing. Organize a charity golf game with local business people or a hunting trip. For young racers, host a group outing with kids and parents or kid-friendly businesses in your community to go go-karting or even host a large pizza party at one of your races. For female drivers, you could do something with female business owners, like a charity fashion show.

8.) Get more help with your race car so you have more time to sell and promote yourself and your race team. Find local mechanics or high school students at engineering or automotive trade schools and see if they want to volunteer on a race team – give them a crew t-shirt and box, race tickets for their family. You’d be surprised who will be willing to help just for the experience!

9.) Have some fun with your marketing and enjoy it! Get your good friends involved and make it part of your social life. You’ll be surprised how many more friends, fans, and sponsors you’ll make who will seek you out if they see that their customers enjoy being around you! Before you know it, you will be enjoying marketing and promotion, and it will be rewarding and fun for you!

10.) Fear? What a fear. Racing drivers are not afraid. Go for it! You can do it!

Some of my favorite quotes about fear:

“The only thing to fear is fear itself” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Fears are bred in us and can be bred if we wish.

– Karl Augustus Menninger

“Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.

– Japanese proverb

“You gain strength, courage and confidence from every experience where you really stop and look fear in the face. You have to do the thing you think you can’t do.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to overcome fear, don’t sit at home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

– Dale Carnegie

“Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professionals the Titanic.”

– Unknown

“It is impossible to have faith and fear at the same time.” – Jackie Pegram (my mentor and Bible study teacher)

I have had to face my own fears in my PR and marketing career. When I was new to the NASCAR scene in the early 90’s – I found it best to seek out mentors and learn from the best you can find who are willing to help you learn the ropes. This gave me the confidence I needed to do a good job for my riders, sponsors and team.

I am here to tell you that I have overcome many fears. I was in your shoes. I have consistently overcome my fears in order to continue to grow and move forward to greater success.

I will not let anything stop me from my dreams and goals. Many people tried to hold me back, push me down. I have also experienced heartbreak, failure, sadness and rejection many times over the years of my career. I walk past them and erase all negativity from my mind. I learned to change my thinking. I will only look forward to my goals and not hold back due to fear or insecurity. My goal is to share my knowledge, life and career lessons, my achievements, experience and passion for marketing with all of you. I am dedicated to helping competitors achieve their dreams and goals – helping you overcome your fears and achieve marketing success. Your success is my success. Dispel the fear, dispel the old myths, ignore any external or internal negativity – and let’s do it! I’m with you all the way!
