Imagine – Vaporware – Gran Turismo 4 Mobile (PSP)
Remember Sony’s original PlayStation Portable promise? Amazing games, on the go, all the time. Right… It really does sound like amazing fun, so why hasn’t the flagship title that was the game the machine was built for still arrived? Yes, we’re looking at Gran Turismo 4 Mobile tonight.
GT4 Mobile was announced at the E3 press conference on May 11, 2004, the same conference where Sony announced the PlayStation Portable. What has not been announced, however, is the reason for the five-year delay. Since the title is essentially a port of the PlayStation 2 version of GT4 at its core, it seems likely that the PSP is assumed to be having storage issues, as surely that can’t be a hardware issue. Since the title’s last public reveal, GT4 Mobile has since been repeatedly delayed, with its completion pushed back until Gran Turismo 5 is completed – whenever that will be…
Since the announcement of GT4 Mobile, developer Polyphony’s small studio has spawned a number of titles such as GT5: Prologue and Tourist Trophy, titles that, dare I say, we could do without in place of a great PSP racer. . The Tourist Trophy was a good job, but as the sales figures showed, people want cars, not bikes. But in the case of GT5: Prologue, it’s a little different! Gran Turismo 5 started out as GT: HD Concept, a fully featured title before it was stripped down to the bare bones, likely due to a lack of development time while the studio worked on the final release of Gran Turismo 5. With so much success with previous titles, especially Gran Turismo 3, you’d they thought Polyphony would understand that you’re not spreading the butter too thin.
Looking at our OLC Vaporline, you can definitely see that for the last half decade, the specter of GT4 Mobile still hovers over the PSP’s future, uncertain and unable to gain substance.
* Announced at the E3 press conference on May 11, 2004, Gran Turismo Mobile is well received by the press and general public. What is notable about this presentation is that it represented the first public display of the PlayStation Portable console itself.
* This game is notably absent from the September 2004 Tokyo Game Show. This is notable as Sony always unveils its flagships at this event to give the public a taste of what to expect.
* Towards the end of 2004, Kazunori Yamauchi, the producer of Gran Turismo, states that the main foundations of the title have been completed and only “make-up” remains to be applied to alleviate some of the disappointment of the earlier no-show.
* 2004 changes to 2005 and the original release date of April 2005 quietly passes. E3 also goes by with no mention from Sony or Polyphony Digital regarding the development of GT4 Mobile. It’s odd that the game would be missing due to the fact that this event is traditionally where all the big titles premiere for the rest of the fiscal year.
* Will miss the Tokyo Game Show again, Sony comments that the title will ship sometime in calendar year 2006. Now the media is starting to question the possibilities of the portable device.
* Speaking of GT4 Mobile in 2006, Yamauchi states: “Of course we are considering PlayStation 3 and PSP connectivity, similar to how a PC connects to a mobile phone. But I still can’t comment on that.” This means that development is still ongoing.
* The year 2007 passes, during which nothing is heard at all!
* In April 2008, Yamauchi stated that the development of GT5 “took much more time and effort than we originally imagined” and that he does not expect the PSP title to be released in 2008. At least he is being honest.
* November 2008, Yamuachi told IGN: “I can only answer that in the same way, but it’s moving forward. It wasn’t dropped from the plans: it’s there.”
* 2009 comes, still nothing on March 12th.
So one of several things has to happen for the studio – best to cancel the damn game, get over it and move on. Other options include firing Yamauchi (unlikely) or creating a special department hired specifically to complete the PSP title. Unfortunately, something has to happen because the smell of steam coming from Polyphonic Digital is certainly musty.
