Metal Detecting As a Hobby

I started metal detecting in 1983 when I was 14 years old. After saving enough money for my first metal detector – a used Garett (USA). It was a monster in terms of both weight and battery consumption, and not particularly easy to operate. Development is fast in this area and I recommend being careful not to buy used metal detectors that are older than 5 years.

Electronics became more sophisticated at the same time as they became cheaper. You would like to bet on a metal detector that you can have in any year, so buy a new one instead.

It’s amazing what you can find coins and jewelry in parks and beaches. I thrive on good beaches because there are many discoveries. My detector finds include coins, jewelry, buttons, belt buckles, and tools from the 18th century and beyond. The picture above shows the results I got during the first year and the Fisher 1265-X metal detector that set the industry standard for performance and ease of use when it came out.

The library can be a great resource if you want to research local history and discover ancient marketplaces, taverns, party/dance venues, and other areas where lost value can be found. Many interesting areas can be found by reading history and looking at old photos, maps and sketches. Over time, it was customary to dig up their valuables, and many never reappeared.

If you want to bet on this hobby, you should get a quality metal detector that has a good range and can separate trash to keep digging to a minimum. The Fisher F2 Metal Detector and the Fisher 1236-X2 Metal Detector are popular new models. As a gift for kids or for those who just need an affordable metal detector to find a lost trinket or keys, there are cheaper options like the Bounty Hunter Junior Metal Detector.

Although I have used the Fisher CZ-70 Quicksilver metal detector for many years, it has become one of the best metal detectors on the market. But in the summer of 2007 I switched to the new Fisher F75 metal detector, which is Fishers 75th anniversary model as a leading manufacturer of metal detectors.

I am very satisfied with the Fisher F75 and can highly recommend it to people looking for the best. It’s a big advance in key areas including discrimination, identification, signal separation, ergometry (light weight and good balance) and depth of range.

Theory and background

The metal detector consists of the principle of a radio transmitter and a radio receiver with their separate circular antenna on the search head. The radio signal was focused into the ground and reflected back to the receiver if it hit metal.

The principle was discovered by chance in the late 1920s by Gerhard Fisher, founder of the Fisher Research Laboratory. In his efforts to develop a navigation system for airplanes and air skis using radio signals, he discovered that interference occurred near buildings with large tin roofs. Fisher was the first to discover that metals reflect radio signals. It is this property that metal detectors use.

Fisher Research Laboratory is currently world renowned for its industrial and hobby metal detectors. The Fishers delivery program includes a variety of measuring instruments which, in addition to metal detectors, include leak candidates, cable finders and cable fault finders.

Einstein was wrong.

In 1931, Gerhard Fisher started manufacturing metal detectors and other measuring instruments in his garage together with 4 employees, Palo Alto, California in the United States. Albert Einstein heard about this young inventor and visited Fisher to learn more about the radio navigation system Fisher had discovered.

When Fisher presented his latest invention, the METALLASCOPE, which was later renamed the M-SCOPE, Einstein shook his head. This product had little faith in Einstein. However, the M-SCOPE proved to be the scoop for Fisher and far more important than the other products. The “Factory” soon had more orders than they could handle and Fisher had to expand their operations.

M-SCOPE users around the world apparently disagreed with Einstein. They used the M-SCOPE to find the hidden metal; preferably valuable metal veins, buried or lost.

Today, Fisher metal detectors are used in a number of areas in addition to the search for coins, jewelry and precious metals. Locating tanks, stopping cranes, survey points, pipes and cables, rebars, lost tools, mines, metal evidence and weapons are just a few examples of the important tasks of today’s Fisher metal detectors.

Fisher’s success shows that Einstein made a mistake. Every year, it has produced thousands of metal detectors that end up with users all over the world. They all carry the well-known Fishers M-SCOPE logo as a salute to the first metal detector.

Another important thing to note is the digging technique. One must not damage lawns and other vegetation. There are several methods to excavate items in a moderate manner. Click here to view a suggested uncovering procedure.

Here are some good guidelines that all metal detectorists should follow.

-Do not use metal detectors without the consent of the landowner.

-Leave the area cleaner than when you came. Please include the junk you dig up.

-Always fill the left hole. Learn to dig in a way that is traumatic to grass and other vegetation.

– Obey all laws that affect memories and areas. Metal detection in such areas is prohibited.

-Return valuable items if you find the owner.

-Do what you can to put this hobby in a positive light.
