Training My Weimaraner Dog to Be at My Side While Riding a Bike Was Challenging
It took a lot of practice and training, but I managed to ride a road bike on paved trails with my Weimaraner. I’d like to share my perspective on how I did it. First, let me start by admitting that I understand all dogs, especially Weimaraners, have very different personalities and how they react to activities. For example, my 4-year-old Weimaraner listens and responds when I call him outside and/or on the trails, but when we’re at the dog park, it’s all about playing, not responding to my instructions. Another thing about my four-legged friend that is different from other dogs I’ve had is that when I walk into the house, even if I’ve only been gone for ten minutes, his strong and powerful personality comes out by howling. and jumps around and it’s very hard to calm down for at least five minutes. And finally, before practice, he got really angry when I took my bike out for the first time that year and drove it around him in the driveway. He always seemed to run ahead of the tire. It got to the point where I would have to stop or slow down. Getting him to pay attention and listen to instructions was impossible when I was on the bike. With a great deal of determination, I am able to hang on to his leash as he runs alongside my bike.
I started off slowly, walking on one side of the bike, holding the bike upright with my left hand and his tripod leash in my right hand, he walked on my right side. We dated for forty-five minutes three non-consecutive days a week. During the same week, on two of the following days, I did intervals of two minutes of walking and two minutes of running for an hour with him. The last two days in a row I have taken him to the dog park to work on coming back to my side when instructed. The dog park is supposed to be a fun place, so I still let him run and play at five-minute intervals, let him come back to walk the trail by my side for another five minutes, and then go back to running and playing at another five minutes. , it all takes an hour. My dog responded well to this training and was not so afraid of being next to the bike or getting in front of it on walks; that’s why he didn’t throw me off balance. I was consistent with this workout routine for two weeks.
My next step was to be a little more aggressive. I started cycling with his leash in my right hand at five minute intervals. For the next five minutes I got off the bike and walked like I did the first training set. This type of interval training also lasted five consecutive days for the next two weeks. The next two days I took him to the dog park and continued to train him to run and play for five minutes and come back to me for another five minutes to walk on the leash, which again took an hour straight.
My last step, which was the most aggressive tactic, was to ride the bike for ten minutes with his leash in my right hand, dismount and bike on my side, and walk with him on my right side. The bike would be between me and my Weimaraner for five days straight. The other two days were again our training sessions at the dog park where he could get play time and walks, all in an hour. I interrupted the training, but consistent, I believed it would keep him focused and assertive. Keeping his mind and body busy and thinking was also a way for me to keep him engaged and excited for training. I have learned from others that Weimaraners need to be defended most of the time. This was my challenge to him.
My weimaraner is great with consistency but also needs strengthening. I admit it was very hard work and I didn’t really keep my mind and body in a daily routine. The progress we have made together is definitely about training. It’s unbelievable how wonderful it feels to have my four-year-old Weimaraner burning off energy and enjoying time together. There are still times when he longs to beat the speed I’m going on the bike, but I just reinforce him and his smooth ride.
Now he’s excited to get the bike on the bike rack and hop in the vehicle knowing we’re going to the trail to burn off some energy and have some fun. I was able to enjoy another physical activity with my favorite four-legged friend.
