Isaac Berger: The Untold Story of Israel’s Greatest Champion

It’s Jerusalem 1947, war is raging between Arabs and Jews. There was no food in the city’s Mea She’arim neighborhood. Someone had to go out while the bombs were falling and get supplies. Known as a fast runner and fearless, 10-year-old Isaac was sent by his mother to save his family and his village. He stood in line while people were being killed on either side of him. He was injured at one point but continued on until he brought food back to save his people.

After the war, Isaac and his family immigrated to America and settled in Brooklyn. Tough place to raise a 5-foot-tall rabbi’s son who goes to school with a yamula on his head. Some of the mean kids made fun of him and took off his hat. Isaac complained to his mother, but the bullying continued. Isaac walked past the gym one day and decided to do something about his problem. He started weight training and made great progress in a short time. His natural body made him the perfect combination of speed, strength and flexibility.

Bullies kept picking on him at school and one day Isaac finally had enough. He challenged the biggest, 6’5″ leader of these tough guys. At 3 o’clock they met in front of a crowd of kids. The bully walked up and Isaac picked him up with lightning speed and slammed him into Needless to say, that ended Isaac’s trouble at school.

In 1955, Isaac won his first national featherweight championship. A litany of other championships followed, including an Olympic gold medal in 1956. The story doesn’t end there. Isaac’s achievements will never be equaled in the annals of weightlifting. In 1957, he broke the world record by bench pressing 258 lbs. in the Maccabean Games in Israel. His 1964 Olympic record of 336 lbs. at a body weight of 130 lbs. making him pound for pound the strongest man in the world. Isaac is a member of both the Jewish Hall of Fame and the American Weightlifting Hall of Fame. In fact, Isaac is so revered in his sport that when a stamp set was minted, Isaac was included along with Jesse Owens, Boris Becker and Arthur Ash.

Isaac and I became friends in the late 1960s and have continued that friendship for over 40 years. Even today, with all his achievements, he lives a quiet life in the center of New York. Fortunately, he had great success in the mail order business of exercise equipment he invented. His future is certain and Isaac has never changed. He’s still the unassuming, optimistic person he’s always been. I am privileged to call him my friend.
