Cockatiel Egg Fostering

There will come a time when desperate situations will force you to take emergency steps to save cockatiel eggs. Some, especially young parents, may leave the clutch. The sudden absence or death of one parent will also result in complete abandonment of the eggs. Nesting activities to support the clutch are reciprocal, with the hen sitting on the eggs at most all night while the male gives her rest intervals during the day. The task will be too much for one parent to handle, and while there are legends that it occurs, it will be truly impossible to accomplish without divine intervention. That would be divine in you.

So there are actually two options to save the clutch, both of which require you to completely remove the egg from the biological parent(s). One is to artificially incubate them and then hand-feed them from day one, a rewarding but exhaustingly expensive and most often heartbreaking experience, as hand-fed chickens from day one are susceptible to a myriad of diseases and lack the immunity provided by a feeding parent.

Another option is fostering. Cultivation was an old strategy that allowed some species to escape extinction. Bengales or Society Finches are famous foster parents who really don’t need a male-female partnership to do their job. When they see a clutch, the whole “society” adopts and raises them. However, the cockatiel parrot world is not as lucky as the finches, only those that are also nesting at the same time can breed.

So option one. Support the abandoned clutch to another nesting pair of cockatiels. Make sure that the difference in age between the original clutch and the one to be grown is no older than three (3) days. This is to avoid large differences in the size of the chickens. The bigger ones will compete with the latecomers for food, and when the difference is too great, the parents will most likely go into survival mode and sacrifice the smaller clutch.

Option number two. Lay the eggs on another nearby parrot species of a similar size, most commonly a parakeet. As with rule number one, watch for disparity in egg age. Remember that counting starts when incubation begins. Cockatiels and budgies have the same average incubation period, eighteen to twenty-one (18-21) days.

Option three. Cultivation under African doves. These are so popular that most breeders have at least a few. Even though they are smaller, they are good and willing foster parents. The problem is that the chicks will be bigger than their foster parents in two weeks, so be prepared to start hand feeding again after that period. At this stage it will be easier to raise them and get most of the immunity they need from their African parents.

Option three. Cultivation under smaller species and larger species of parrots such as the parakeet. No experienced breeder has reported any success, so it’s best to abandon the idea and continue hand feeding.

Cultivation is the privilege of only a few, but if available, it is a great time, money and pet saver.
