Film EMI Movie Review
EMI’s film revolves around the central theme of ‘Liya Hai To Chukana Padega’ (If you have borrowed, you must pay it back) and the strength of the film is the originality of the idea on the relevant topic of getting life’s goodies on loans. – personal, domestic or credit cards. Debutant director Saurabh Kabra scored with four stories.
EMI opens with the first character Ryan (Arjun Rampal), a self-employed DJ who aspires and lives life-size and is a habitual defaulter. He happens to meet Nancy ( Malaika Arora Khan ) at a disco and falls head over heels for her beauty. Flamboyant Ryan wants her in his life. His desire for a bigger and better life is even stronger. With that, his credit limits rise too much…..
The other character is Prerna (Urmila Matondkar), an unemployed widow coping with her husband’s suicide. Her goal is to get a sum insured that would be easy for her and her 5-year-old daughter to contribute. But she must prove that her husband did not commit suicide, which can be done at a price. She gets a personal loan as a quick solution to this and all her urgent needs…..
The third character is Anil and Shilpa (Ashish Choudhary and Neha Uberoi), a working couple who want to start their life together by entering into the sacrament of marriage. But have a long wish list to have your own home, own car, laptop and most importantly honeymoon in a foreign destination. Ends with personal loans, home loans and credit card payments. Everything seems fine until they decide to end their relationship…
The fourth character is Chandrakant (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), a retired father and his only son (Pushkar Jog) who want to go abroad for further studies as it is the current trend. The father’s savings are simply not enough to finance his son’s dreams and he is forced to consider an education loan as the only way out……
All these characters become defaulters due to unavoidable circumstances of their own making. Enter Sattar Bhai (Sanjay Dutt), the owner of the Goodluck Recovery Agency, a savior for those caught in a debt trap, most wanted by banks, telcos and various multinationals. From bhaigiri to business to politics to social work, this is how Sattar wants to progress in life. Sattar follows a simple rule in his business – lend Liya Hai to Chuka and his cronies using strong arm tactics.
Will Sattar be able to use this principle in dealing with disparate characters?
Director Saurabh Kabra kept a steady pace throughout the film and was ably supported by cinematographer Paramvir Singh. Khalid Azmis’ dialogues match it. The music is not that great except for the title song sung by Sanjay Dutt.
Sanjay Dutt rules his performance and got into the soul of the character. Arjun Rampal is equally good. Ashish Choudhary is also worth mentioning. Malaika Arora Khan sizzles in dance numbers. Neha Uberoi is fine. Kulbhushan Khabanda is a class act. Manoj Joshi, DayaShankar Pandey and Snehal Dabhi add the required masala.
EMI has synergy with real cases; it may appear to deviate from reality. But overall it conveys the fragility of today’s lifestyle based on EMIs and responsible borrowing if need be.
