Movie Review – "Alice’s House" Is an Extraordinary Brazilian Film Brilliantly Conceived and Acted

“Alice’s House” is an extraordinary Brazilian film, brilliantly conceived and well worth seeing. This kitchen drama is a refreshingly naturalistic look at a middle-class urban São Paulo family thrown into turmoil by sexual and emotional betrayal. The ever-resonating Carla Ribas in the title role takes us on a harrowing journey where she is repeatedly rejected as she seeks liberation and romance.

The story revolves around forty-year-old Alice, who works as a manicurist in a beauty salon. He shares an apartment on the outskirts of the city with his mother Dona Jacira, her husband Lindomar, a taxi driver, and their three sons, Lucas, Edinho and Junior. The film is about the daily life of a woman in which she stumbles upon herself and repeatedly makes the same mistakes. With his small actions, intimate internalizations, and daily frustrations, nothing is safe in this emotional void. It is a fragile family that can fall apart and fall apart at any moment.

At home, men pay little attention to Alice, while she lives an engaging life at work. The warm environment of the beauty salon offers hope, while her cramped apartment life suffocates her with narcissistic indifference. He can tell jokes with co-workers and customers, drink after work and regret wanting something better.

Everyone in Alice’s world has a secret: her husband has developed a passion for underage girls; one of her sons is a gay con artist, another a petty thief, and the youngest is troubled by his sexual awakening, while her old mother is slowly going blind. Even her clients have their secrets, and Alice soon falls for the same sexual intrigues and deceptions and develops her own secret life.

Director Chico Teixeira creates a highly detailed world for these characters in both their emotional and physical worlds. At the end of the film, not only Alice’s cramped apartment can be described, but also the wants and desires of each character. The film also provides an insight into Brazil’s low-key culture and its casual approach to sex, at least among the middle class. Sex, love, romance are the forces in this story, and even Grandma finds solace in the voice of a radio talk show host. Her quest is to become the winner in his call-in show.

Navigating this story can take some effort as there is no music to guide you through its sensibilities. So the judgments you come to are probably your own. All the more remarkable is the acting performance of Carly Ribas in the lead role. Her range portrays the myriad of emotions that drive the story through its innocent flirtations, dramatic entanglements and their harsh consequences. Director Teixeira uses silence to focus on this inner turmoil. There is one scene where Alice can’t sleep and goes to the balcony to clear her nerves. Her mother (Berta Zemel) comes out and stands by her side without speaking. It is a touching scene where the mother, though blind, ironically sees and feels all that her daughter endures. Just because I was there is enough.

Filming without using dialogue, the director said, “I found that the body speaks for itself, like a dance. I learned that bodies speak a lot.”

Made with limited resources, “Alice’s House” is an extraordinary film that is unique and imaginative in many ways. He deals with various scams along with the tragedy of a woman tied to her family, but longs for freedom from the boredom and monotony of her life. Despite the hardships she faces, she has the optimism and resilience to make us root for her happiness. The hand-held camera elegantly finds moments of realization, reflection and hope in contrast with pain.

Carla Ribas is a theater actress who started acting at the age of 35 and got the role on the recommendation of the famous theater coach and casting director Fatima Toledo. It is Carla’s first feature film role, for which she has already received numerous awards and recognition throughout the industry. The excellent cast is also spot on. Before production, they worked together for three months under the guidance of Fatima Toledo. The actors never saw the script, but instead took their lines from The Laws of Fatima.

Famed documentary filmmaker Tico Teixeira is praised for his ability to get his subjects to open up about their innermost feelings. This experience is most evident in “Alice’s House,” his award-winning first feature, an extraordinarily insightful film worth seeing.
