Football’s equivalent of the Oscars swept into London on Tuesday as the first ever FIFpro Awards were announced in front of renowned stars from the worlds of sport, music, screen and even our very own Marc Duffy (but the legality of how the ticket was obtained is still in doubt!)

Over 38,000 players from 40 countries representing FIFpro took part in the voting, with 55 players eventually shortlisted. After a night of great entertainment, including awards for Ronaldinho (World Player of the Year), Wayne Rooney (Young Player of the Year) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Young Fan Player of the Year), the World XI was announced as:

MF-STEVEN GERRARD (England/Liverpool): Gerrard helped lift Liverpool to a fifth European Cup with an inspirational performance in Istanbul last season, earning him selection in your World XI. With almost 300 appearances for Liverpool, Gerrard has lifted the League Cup (twice), FA Cup and UEFA Cup in seven years in the first team. Liverpool’s driving force when Gerrard is at the top of his game is pretty much unstoppable.

MF- FRANK LAMPARD (England/Chelsea): Fourth player to appear in both FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. Winning Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, Barclay’s Player of the Year and PFA Fans’ Player of the Year just goes to show what a season Frank Lampard Jnr has had. The £11m signing from West Ham has left many fans and pundits confused as to why Chelsea were so cut out for being an overweight and overrated player. But Lampard’s four years have seen him become a fixture in a team that scores important goals from midfield.

MF-KAKA (Brazil/Ac Milan): The 23-year-old has really shone this season with a superb first-half performance against Liverpool in the Champions League final. Signed by FC São Paulo in 2003, Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite scored 10 goals in 30 games in his first season, winning the Italian Serie A championship and the European Super Cup. Kakao’s best position is just behind the striker, where his killer pass and late arrival into the box has quickly become his trademark.

FC-ADRIANO (Brazil/Inter Milan): A must-sign for all Football Manager players, Adriano Leite Ribeiro showed what a class striker he is, scoring an impressive 15 goals in 16 games last season. Adriano, a strong and very skilful striker who seems to have been around for ages, is still only 23 and has an incredible future ahead of him.

FC- ANDREI ŠEVČENKO: (Ukraine/AC Milan): Last player to be selected in both FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. Signing for $26 million from Dynamo Kyiv, Shevchenko will become one of the best strikers to grace Serie A. In December 2004, Shevchenko was named European Footballer of the Year after scoring the winning penalty against Juventus in the 2003 Champions League final. Shevchenko can scoring goals with both feet, he excels with great close control and pace that often leaves defenders dead.
