Top 10 Benefits of Living Without TV

Think you can’t live without your electronic companion, the TV? Do you think that if you get rid of television, your life will be empty and meaningless? On the contrary, life without television can be much calmer, more pleasant, healthier and happier. Can you imagine…?

1. You miss all the attack ads during election season.

I didn’t see a single attack ad in the last election – not one! Negativity. Distortion. Lies. I missed it all. It was almost as fun as overlooking the negativity, lies and distortions in the daily news. Instead, I explored questions that I thought were important. If you found attack ads annoying during the last election, you might want to consider getting rid of your TV for at least the next election season.

2. Your mind gets rid of commercial jingles.

No more annoying commercial jingles running through my brain. I remember how annoying it was when I had TV. I very much enjoy the peace that comes with their absence. All you need to enjoy this peace is to get rid of your TV.

3. Holidays are significantly less stressful.

I can tell that the “holiday season” has started from the displays in the stores. Otherwise, I am almost completely disconnected from the annoying orgies of the materialistic scumbag who urges me to buy, buy, buy. In fact, all holidays are more enjoyable without television. Easter, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, New Years and all other holidays are much less stressful.

4. You and your children can become addicted – to LEARNING.

A few weeks ago I taught my 6 year old son how to search for worms on the internet. Then he wanted to learn about birds, frogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits and snails. He searches the internet and reads as many books as he can get his hands on. Like my son, I also use the internet to research and explore ideas and interests.

Some people emphasize the educational value of television. My experience is that television doesn’t even begin to compare to books and the internet when it comes to learning. However, don’t take my word for it. Test it yourself.

5. Your kids will stop nagging you about the things they see in commercials.

My kids aren’t always angels, but since we got rid of the TV, they don’t suffer from things like they used to. Plus, when I get them toys, they play with them a lot more. Their toys better match their interests. Plus, ads, those rats of materialism, are no longer diverting them from the toys they already have to the “latest/greatest” new toys.

6. You can wean your family off soft drinks and other junk food.

Soft drinks are one of the main culprits in the obesity epidemic. I weaned my kids off soda. Once they were away from the soda ads for a while, I simply started avoiding that supermarket isle. Sometimes they get a soda as a treat. But now, when they are thirsty, they ask for water.

Moreover, when they are bored, they play. Exercise and lack of soda helps keep them fit. If you’re trying to keep your kids fit, getting rid of the TV can make that task a lot easier.

7. You lose track of the latest escapades of Paris Hilton and other such notables.

Without television, I am blissfully cut off from the celebrity circus. Honestly, I didn’t even know who Paris Hilton was until a friend mentioned her name on a forum. When it comes to celebrities, ignorance really is bliss. I have much better things to do with my time and energy. I’m sure you do too.

8. Don’t worry about how sex and violence on TV can affect your family.

That’s just not a problem. I don’t have to write to my representative in Congress to ask the government to fix the problem or even bother about it. This problem went away when I got rid of our family TV. Personally, I only think about this issue as it relates to my website. In this regard, the problem gets worse, but only if you have a TV.

9. You don’t get upset about trash on TV.

Someone recently emailed me after being extremely frustrated and angry about content on TV. He searched for “tv ass” and somehow found my site. He texted me about how “TV IS GOING OFF!”

It’s true – TV sucks. It can be tempting to rant and rave about trash on TV, but that also takes up time and energy. The solution is simple: Don’t get upset; just get rid of the damn tv. Your life will immediately become calmer and more pleasant.

10. You find time to follow your dreams.

After getting rid of my television, I found myself chasing old dreams that I had let slip over time. I am now close to realizing a dream that I originally thought would take a lifetime. If you’ve ever said to yourself, “I don’t have time to follow my dreams,” turn off the TV and time will appear like a magic wand.

Test it yourself

It may be hard to believe that life without television has such benefits. If any of these benefits sound appealing, give it a try. Don’t take my word for it. Get rid of TV for a month and see how your life will improve. You may see some of these benefits immediately, or you may have to go through a one-week opt-out period. By the end of the month, you will probably be pleasantly surprised by the improvements.
