Managing Kids’ Behaviour – Kids 5, Adults 0 – Not the Result You Want!

More problems to deal with in mainstream school – but some good examples of how things can go wrong and what to do about misbehaviour…

I follow very closely what is going on in the schools where the children who have told me go. Why? Largely so the kids know I know what they’re up to and am able to solve problems when they arise. In addition, I can support teachers to learn to manage their behavior effectively. There is so little training available on how to manage children’s behavior – and since much of what is available is imprecise, vague and mostly useless, adults need all the help they can get!

Anyway, I called the school yesterday morning to report a boy, Jack, who recently moved up to 5th grade. His new homeroom teacher recently joined the school and is only in her second year of teaching. Like many others, she is expected to know about child management – she has received no training or advice.

I always stress that what you do when things go wrong is what measures your success as a behavior manager. If you haven’t been trained to deal with potentially difficult situations, how on earth are you supposed to know how to proceed? It’s no wonder that a lack of confidence in managing classroom behavior is cited as the number one reason why teachers leave the profession. Inadequate behavior management training is offensive to young teachers… and children!

Off your soapbox Liz… what happened next?

I was told that Jack started arguing with the teaching assistant when he was supposed to be doing some written work the previous afternoon. The adult tried to get him to work, but Jack became increasingly clumsy and argumentative – he became quite verbally aggressive. The more the adult insisted, the more Jack dug his heels in and argued even more. At this point, it is essential that adults take effective measures to assert their authority. What were they doing? Um — I’m sorry, but they didn’t do the right thing.

They became increasingly concerned that pushing Jack to work would create an unstable situation and feared he would become more violent, so they backed off and gave Jack some paint to finish it off!

OH NO! A perfect example of rewarding unacceptable behavior – and the worst thing you can do!

And the result?

Jack 5, adults NIL… total control handed over to a 9 year old… the result you wanted…

So, where did that leave me and what did I do? I gently told the teacher that she had done the wrong thing, but that it could be fixed. I had to let her know that I would support her to make sure she took the necessary steps. The unfortunate thing is that if simple behavior management techniques had been used years ago when a much smaller and younger Jack first started flexing his little muscles, a lot of suffering would have been avoided – but then again, if only everyone could do what I do. then I’d be out of a job… um, maybe I’m shooting myself in the foot here and should shut up…

With a plan firmly in place, Jack arrived and had to face the consequences of the previous afternoon’s appalling behavior – first apologetic letters to both adults at school, on his own time. He was then told that if he misbehaved again there would be further consequences. It would be up to him if he had to face the consequences or not – behave yourself and there would be no consequences – simple really! He got word that I was not at all pleased with the news I had from school.

Jack went to school that afternoon after reminding him to give the letters to the adults and offer a verbal apology as well as letters for his bad behavior. Later in the afternoon I decided to check in later on how things were going. They were perfectly fine — Jack worked well in class and used good manners like they were going out of style!

Consequences focus on children’s minds – they need to know that bad behavior will not be tolerated and that adults mean what they say and implement consequences when necessary.

The final result? A happy little boy and adults with growing confidence in managing their behavior… that’s what makes it worth it!
