Short Story – Janu, The Mountain Bird

Janu and I were classmates. It’s a shame to call it a school. A thatched shed, leaking in the monsoon rains, with three teachers who have to teach all four standards because our science teacher has been transferred.

Janu was older than me, but she failed twice and we became classmates.

My dad worked in the bay and rarely came home.

Janu lived on another plot of land in a shack with her parents, who were daily wage earners and did small jobs. She helped mom with the housework. I helped her in her studies because she was weak in all subjects.

The hills where we lived were full of small streams and wild trees. Jana and I wandered around and picked fruit and berries. With my slingshot, I could precisely target a mango, even at a good height, and knock it down with a stone. And the mango was really very tasty. We shared everything and left our parents’ share.

Hare, porcupine, wild fowl, honey, etc. were also occasionally available.

Or we would go fishing. Janu was an expert at catching them in streams. They weren’t big but that was all we had as the nearest market was miles away.

There was a post office two miles from our school. Since the postman was reluctant to go every day, he only went once a week. I drove Jana by bike and on other days I carried letters and kitchen utensils. Mom was reluctant to send me alone because I was too small, even though I felt I was big enough.

One day Janu noticed a large ball of something I had never seen before. It was full of fiber and Janu could easily break it. She said it was the dung of a wild elephant and that we should hurry home as the animal was nearby.

We had barely moved a few meters when suddenly she pulled me and we climbed a hill from the top of which we could observe the surroundings. I gasped. She held me close and asked me to look at the stream below me.

I couldn’t believe my eyes! A dozen of these animals, large and small, swam and played in the water. When the child tried to run to the ground, his mother pulled him down. I was sorry, but she told Jan that it was necessary for it to learn to swim. When Janu knew it was safe, we returned home.

One day we were swimming in the stream. I noticed that her breasts were like lotus buds. The circles around the tips were small and pink. Mothers were dark. I asked her why that was. She just smiled and kissed me.

On the way from the post office, a truck stopped us near Jan. The driver took her and was about to return to his cabin. Everyone looked and the girl screamed and screamed: leave me alone.

I always carried my scarf and a small bag full of stones. In no time, a large rock hit the driver’s back. He fell and we both rushed home. After that, Janu was not allowed to go to the post office. I became a hero.

When standards 5 to 7 were added to our school, I requested my father to allow me to complete my studies there. I didn’t want to leave Jana.

We extended our mountain walk into the hills a few miles beyond and took our food with us. Once we noticed a man in trousers and shirt coming with a native woman, completely naked except for a few leaves around her groin. Janu signaled to me to hide in the bushes and watch. They looked around and saw no one around, the woman lay down in the grass. The man removed his pants and inserted his large cock into the opening between her thighs. Then he would put it in, take it out and repeat the process for some time. He then gave her some money and they left.

I asked Jan what it all meant. She was very excited.

She asked: do you want to do it? Come.

Then she also removed her skirt and asked me to remove my underwear. She lay back and spread her thighs wide, revealing a slit that she spread with both hands. Do you see the hole?

I saw one, very small, through which I could only put the tip of my penis. She then pressed my buttocks hard against her groin as my cock fully entered her hole. I experienced a heavenly feeling.

Then I knew what to do.

The climax was so exciting that we wanted to do it every day.

I asked her: how did you learn that?

Sometimes my parents did it during the day too. Then I watched it through the keyhole in the door.

But our “honeymoon” was cut short by fate.

My dad uprooted me and my mom from the mountains and took us to Dubai where I finished my studies and started my own business. I was married ten years ago. We have no problems.

Still thinking about the mountain rat?

My wife woke me from my pleasant memories and offered me a cup of hot tea.

Don’t call that innocent girl a rat, I protested.

Something new about Jan; I said nothing about our secret meetings.

She asked: Why don’t you search her?

I wrote letters to the postmaster; he never answered.

Her: Next time we go to India, we have to go in person. I want to see her too.

So we searched the maps and found a point in the Vindhya range. We had to contact the forest officials who helped us reach the post office.

The area has changed beyond recognition. Motorized roads and terraced housing were not uncommon.

Not far from the school was her cabin, still unchanged. I rushed there and was shocked to see an old woman with no teeth, her hair all white and her face creased with wrinkles….Is it Janu?

She came and put her face on my shoulder and wet my shirt with copious tears. I tried in vain to hide my tears.

Janu lamented: I lost everything. First my only son; then my husband

I didn’t know what to say. I gave her a thousand rupees and we left with a promise to come again.
