The Proper Care and Feeding of Your Attitude – 7 Tips to Maintain a Positive and Healthy Attitude

Much has been written and said about attitude. In fact, you can find literally “tons” of information on the right mindset, positive attitude, winning attitude, and so on. So what makes this article different?

Like everything else in life, having the right attitude takes practice. Your attitude is the key to success in every aspect of your life, such as your health, building wealth, relationships, success at work, and enjoying everyday life. Your attitude is more than just deciding to “think happy thoughts,” although thinking happy thoughts is certainly the key to developing a positive mental attitude.

I assume you are reading this because you already understand the importance of your attitude. You also understand that there is a difference between choosing to have a positive attitude and having difficulty maintaining a positive attitude.

Your body requires proper care and nutrition to achieve and maintain good health. You simply cannot eat one nutritious meal, take one vitamin, and have one really great day of exercise to be healthy. This also applies to your attitude.

Developing and maintaining a positive, healthy and productive attitude starts with deciding to change your attitude. Deciding to have a great attitude is the starting point, and that decision is a daily decision, even a moment-by-moment decision. With all that life throws our way every day, the decision alone can be difficult. Here are some tips on how to properly care for and feed your attitude.

1. Be grateful. You and I have circumstances in our lives that take a toll on us every day. Most of the time we let negative circumstances get the best of us and our positive mental attitude takes a beating. Take a moment, several if necessary, and think about what you have to be grateful for. If you’re having trouble getting started, let me tell you to go to a mirror, get close to it, and breathe into it. If the mirror fogs up, you’re in good shape…you’re alive. Next, think of other things you are grateful for, even the simplest things like your family, your job, the very fact that you are able to read this. Each of them is a true blessing, and for every blessing you can think of, there is someone who does not have such a blessing. There are countless studies that examine the connection between good health and a grateful attitude. In a story that aired on the CBS Radio Network The Osgood file, Dr. Michael McCullough of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Dr. Robert Emmons of the University of California, Davis, said their initial scientific study shows that gratitude plays a significant role in a person’s sense of well-being. Develop an attitude of gratitude.

2. Have faith. Research has shown that 97% of the things people worry about never happen. The remaining 3% are things that are mostly out of our control, so we won’t do anything about them anyway. A small portion of that 3% are direct or indirect results of our choices, so learning to make better choices is key to avoiding the worries we can control. Believe in yourself and your decisions about things you can control. Believe in the One who made you and know that He cares for you. Believe that good things are in store for you and focus your attention on the good rather than the bad. Life consists of opposites. Sir Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Faith has an opposite called fear. Both work equally well. When you allow fear to control your thinking, you literally bring negativity into your life. Bad things happen even when you don’t want them to because you act out of fearful anticipation. On the other hand, faith brings positive things into your life. Not enough space is heard to fully explore the deeper meaning of the effects of belief and fear. Let me summarize the concept of faith this way, expect good things and good things will happen. Develop an attitude of faith.

3. Protect your mind. Look at the influences in your life. Decide which ones should be eliminated or at least minimized. According to the AC Nielsen Company, the average American watches more than 4 hours of television each day. That’s over 9 years when you’re 65! Most of what can be seen on television has very little positive value. Do the TV shows you watch leave you feeling empowered or deflated? If what you watch, listen to, and read brings you down instead of uplifting, you need to stop letting that stuff into your mind. Like it or not, they have a profound negative effect on your attitude. The same is true with the people in your life. Know someone who brightens up a room just by leaving it? Are you dating someone who always has some bad news to share or some tidbit of negative information about someone else that you want to expose? Avoid them like the plague! These people will only cause a negative effect on your attitude. Remove everything possible that negatively affects you. This can be difficult at first because negativity is very addictive. In the end, it’s like taking poison a little at a time, so get rid of it! Develop an attitude of discernment.

4. Feed your mind. You don’t have to look far to find uplifting, inspiring and motivational literature to read. If you don’t have time for a lot of reading, check out the audio versions that you can listen to in your car as you travel from place to place. Music has the power to go beyond your conscious mind and deep into your subconscious. A good rule of thumb when choosing the music you listen to is to ask yourself, “Does this make me feel better or worse?” Consider whether the TV shows you watch are giving your mind positive information. Find and engage in conversations with positive people. If you notice a conversation taking a negative turn, insert a positive comment or idea to get it back on track. Develop an attitude towards mental nourishment. This leads to another process Proper care and feeding of your attitude.

5. Change your speech. Search Google for the phrase “power of words” and you’ll find 116 million results. The same search on Yahoo shows 122 million results. Words have power. Choose your words carefully. They can be used to build or destroy, and as you already know, the words you speak affect everyone who hears them. Your words come from your mind, so it is necessary to mentally speak positive words to yourself. Keep them positive. By consciously changing your speech, you are subconsciously changing your attitude. You will be surprised how this one little piece of advice will bring about positive changes in your relationships with others, but more importantly, the changes that will occur within yourself and your own thoughts. Develop an attitude of positive self-talk.

6. Give to others. Whenever possible, give someone something they may not have. The one simple gift you can give anyone, anytime, without it costing you or losing them, is a smile. Years ago I adopted the motto “Leave them better than you found them” which can be as simple as opening the door for someone, smiling, offering a nice comment and many other simple things. Of course I recommend donating to charities, but what I’m talking about here is giving yourself a little something to brighten someone else’s day. On the other hand, you feel better doing it. Cultivate a giving attitude.

7. Lighten up. Start by being friendly to everyone. Nobody likes sour meringue, so just take it easy and be someone easy to be with. People tend to like people who like them. When you learn to love others, you get rid of a lot of tension and stress in your everyday life. Interestingly, if you follow the previous tips, you’ll be surprised how naturally this one develops. By becoming someone who longs to be around you, you benefit them and yourself. You’ll soon find that those around you begin to lighten up and model themselves after you, even though they may not realize it’s happening. Cultivate a pleasant attitude.

These tips on properly caring for and feeding your posture will help you on your way to maintaining your posture and running smoothly. Just as you take care of yourself physically, you need to take care of yourself mentally. It’s easier than you might think at first, but it requires effort on your part. If attitude is everything, then surely we must learn to take care of ours. You’ll be healthier for it.
