8 Secrets to Reduce Stress

The last post discussed taking responsibility for our health. It’s a concept that’s uniquely foreign to millions in the United States, but it’s a concept that’s very simple. It depends on two factors:

1.) Eliminate stress

2.) Better lifestyle choices

It sounds simple and easy on paper or on a computer screen, but there is more to it than words. Today we look at the first part of this accountability equation, eliminating stress

The truth about stress

Stress is a thought, plain and simple. You can’t pull stress out of the air on a windy day. You can’t stress eat a greasy taco from Rolberto’s Taco Shack. Stress doesn’t bite your nose and infect you.

Stress is all you. Or me.

It’s about how we perceive things. Remember the old saying that life is “10% of what happens to us and 90% of how we deal with it.” We all experience ups and downs. The problem is that in our society, with all the talk of war, economic disparity, health insurance woes, and political unrest, the downs seem to outweigh the ups. Add in a stressful job, a relationship on the rocks, or car trouble (my personal nightmare) and it can add up to serious stress.

Our bodies were designed to handle stress in small amounts, namely “fight or flight”. If a hungry lion is approaching you or you’re walking around the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, Texas at midnight, you either turn and run or you stay and fight back. The truly amazing thing is that the human body can mobilize in an instant to enable fight or flight. Here is the procedure:

Dilated pupils– gives us the ability to receive more from our surroundings.

A beating heart– sends more blood to the muscles than usual so we can move faster.

Cold, sweaty skin and pale face– because all the blood goes to the muscles.

Fast, deep breathing– sends more oxygen to the muscles so they can work longer.

Decreased digestion– blood is sent away from the GI system to the muscles in the arms and legs. Digesting that pizza can wait!

Increased release of adrenaline and norepinephrine– gives us that “adrenaline rush” to sprint or punch!

But what happens when, instead of being a Leo, we have years of arguments and fights in our marriage, or we work 70 hours a week for years at a high-pressure job? You don’t want your pupils to be constantly dilated or adrenaline coursing through your body all of a sudden.

All of these stress responses will eventually lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, and/or a whole list of diseases too extensive to name here.

Eight secrets

The key is knowing that stress is an emotional as well as a physical reaction and not something that just happens to us because fate decided it would.

What if the situation you’re in is simply too challenging for you to shrug your shoulders and say, “Whatever happens, happens?” I went through chiropractic school and took countless exams. I had to find a way to pay off my student loans for four months straight and support my wife and three kids. We all have different situations that can make us anxious from time to time. We also have the ability to do some things to minimize the stress we might feel.

1.) Get specific chiropractic adjustments-Stress is one of the main initiating causes, if not the main cause, of vertebral subluxation. An upper cervical spine subluxation can really make a person’s life miserable if not corrected. Over time, a subluxation can really add to someone’s stress. If someone suffers from an illness and it interferes with their daily functions, the added stress will only make this vicious cycle worse. So first things first – get your upper cervical spine checked for subluxation and if you have it, get it fixed immediately.

2.) Exercise– For me, intense exercise is just the cure for a stressful day. Whether it’s running 3 miles, doing numerous bodyweight exercises, or lifting weights, I always feel better. Exercise releases neurotransmitters in our body that help us feel great. Not to mention, if you exercise regularly, the changes you will see in the mirror will start to give you confidence and boost your self-esteem.

3.) Meditate– Some people meditate by chanting. Some meditate by sitting quietly and clearing their mind of all thoughts. Others meditate with prayer. No matter what form of meditation you do, do it in a quiet place for about 20-30 minutes. You will have more sense to effectively manage the stress you may face that day. In my experience, the best time to meditate is early in the morning around 4-5 am. But getting up early means you need more of #4.

4.) Sleep- Ah, sleep. Such a rare commodity, at least I have it at home. With small children in the house, this is not always possible as my wife and I would like. But if you don’t have small children, then there is no excuse for going to bed early. As the old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise makes you healthy, wealthy and wise”. If you keep the lights off by 10pm every night, you won’t need an alarm clock eventually. You get a deep, restful sleep and automatically wake up around 4-5 am, no later than 6 am. If you are well rested, things don’t get to you as much and your brain is better equipped to logically deal with the problems that may arise during the day.

5.) Tidy up- Organize your life and worry less. Get a daily planner, or if you’re digitally minded, a PDA and organize your days and weeks. Get a file cabinet and store all important papers such as bills, receipts and personal records. Back up all the work you do on your computer to CDs in case your computer crashes. All this will bring you peace and prevent you from finding time for everything.

6.) Be on time- Leave early. Try to get where you need to be 15 minutes early. This was a big one for me. I was always years late. I always tried to get to work, school, or church right when I was supposed to be there. And chances are, I never got there when I should have gotten there. Leaving early gives you time to drive stress-free, even if there’s a traffic jam on the highway. You won’t have to lie on the horn while cursing and screaming at the top of your lungs at the rubber tree in front of you. It gives you the ability to walk to work or school in peace and organize your materials for the day without running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

7.) Stop watching news- News outlets make money off of public fear. You never see good news, mainly because they don’t make money. You don’t hear about the thousands of planes that land safely around the world every day. You heard about the one that crashed. You hear about the pilots, passengers, crash site, etc. over and over until the next disaster strikes somewhere else. Sex sells, as does bad news. If you want to reduce your stress, stop watching this garbage. I’m not saying go hide in a cave, but be selective and concise about what you choose to watch. You don’t always need details.

8.) Have sex- You’re probably reading this last one with a dirty grin, but the truth is, I wouldn’t be saying this if more than 50% of marriages these days didn’t fail. And of the marriages that do fail, many are not happy unions. Talk about stress! I’m not talking about going to the club and taking home whoever comes. I’m talking about a healthy, monogamous relationship where two people love each other. When you love your partner, sex is much better and you’re likely to have it more often. It’s hard to be stressed if you have a good sex life!

If you sit down and make it your goal to do each of these things, I can promise you that your stress will decrease dramatically, maybe even disappear. But as I said before, it won’t be easy. You have to act, not just once, but every day, over and over again.
