Ireland – 10 Great Hotels

There are many lists of the best hotels, restaurants, golf courses and attractions in Ireland that serve as a guide for consumers, but I would much prefer a barometer of personal experience that can have different tools to achieve a position on the list.

It really doesn’t matter here whether the hotel is a very luxurious 5 star affair or a more modest 2 or 3 star operation. If this were the case, it would only be measuring all the top 5 star hotels in Ireland, which reduces it to a very simple and flawed analysis and ignores the fact that there are many hotels that perform above standard. their star rating and many people who do the opposite. And of course value for money is a big consideration in the decision.

Whether you are staying on vacation or for business reasons, the hotel must offer above all what it promises. It has to do what it says on the tin. There is no point in having a lavish website touting the hotel’s virtues and facilities when the actual reality of what they offer during your stay will disappoint you. As in any business venture, the most important people in the hotel game are the employees from top to bottom.

I have traveled extensively throughout Ireland both for leisure and business – two completely different mindsets when evaluating accommodation and facilities – and here are my top 10, derived from my own memories and feelings and the quality of service provided.

1. Conrad Mount Juliet, Thomastown, County Kilkenny. A beautiful old stately estate, the ancestral seat of the Mc Calmont family, set in rich pastoral land in south Kilkenny, has been transformed into a world-renowned Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course that has hosted the Irish Open and the World Matchplay Championship. In addition, there is a newly built state-of-the-art equestrian center along with a lavish spa and entertainment center. If you want to go the self-catering route, there are luxury lodges on the edge of the golf course with the hotel’s facilities for leisure, available at all times. The Lady Helen restaurant in the old house is regal in design and classic fare.

2. Kellys Resort Hotel, Rosslare, Co. Wexford. If ever a hotel lived up to its 4 star rating, it must be the institution that is Kellys Resort Hotel in Rosslare Strand, County Wexford. Long established, it is constantly innovating and the word “resort” in the name is not used lightly as you will never have to leave the place, such as the attractions, amenities, leisure activities and food you desire. You can get to the beach from the hotel and the spa is called the Sea Spa for the very good reason that all the hydrotherapy procedures are with sea water. Forget your diet if you go there because they will literally feed morning, noon, afternoon and night! Truly a gem and family run, which is reflected in the high level of personal service.

3. Hilton Mount Wolsey, Tullow County Carlow. Mount Wolsey was also originally a stately home which lies just outside the small town of Tullow, east of Carlow. Now owned by the Morrissey family, it is a superb 4 star property with a Christy O’Connor designed golf course, leisure center and spa. A very convenient location with easy access from Dublin, it is popular with residents of the capital looking for a weekend getaway.

4. Merrion Hotel, Merrion Street, Dublin 2. This 5-star hotel comprises four magnificent Georgian townhouses cleverly and seamlessly joined together, conveniently located in the center of Dublin. A modest and understated entrance belies a luxurious interior complemented by an almost obsessive level of personal service. Great rooms and suites with excellent leisure and spa facilities, which you’ll need when dining at Dublin’s most famous restaurant, Patrick Gilbaulds, Ireland’s finest Michelin-starred dining experience.

5. Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell, County Cavan. The Slieve Russell, one of Ireland’s largest 4-star hotels, is located in the heart of Ireland’s Lakelands region. It offers excellent amenities more akin to a 5-star experience, and excellent service probably sets it apart from many similarly equipped establishments. An excellent championship golf course, leisure center and renowned spa are ideal retreats for families or couples. The hotel is only 90 minutes from Dublin and Belfast, which adds to the convenience.

6. Ashford Castle, Cong, County Galway. This was the original nestor of Irish hotels at a time when Ireland had no luxury resorts. It can still carry its weight in a competitive market. Located in the picture-postcard village of Cong on the shores of Lough Corrib, Ashford Castle exudes an addictive atmosphere of luxury at surprisingly reasonable prices. Superior service and beautiful old-world rich and warm decor draw the visitor into its bosom. The hotel was recently bought by Gerry Barrett of Galway City’s famous “G” Hotel and the resort offers all the pampering one could need.

7. Solus Elske Hotel, County Donegal. Winner of the Irish Hotel of the Year Award for 2010, the only 5-star hotel in County Donegal certainly deserves recognition. Located east of Donegal town, the hotel consists of 98 suites and envelops the visitor in opulence and genuine friendly service. The food is excellent considering it is very new to the market and the facilities are excellent. A great base for exploring the vast County Donegal. Thanks to the magnificent facade of the castle, it is a very popular wedding venue.

8. Jurys Inn, Galway City. Located in the heart of Galway city, close to the famous Spanish Arch and very convenient to the pubs, clubs and restaurants of this vibrant city, Jurys Inn Galway pushes the boundaries of the 3 star rating. Location, facilities and above all service make it the best of the Jurys Inn chain in Ireland. Great for business and pleasure and especially economical for families. A fantastic all-round hotel in a great location in Ireland’s funnest city.

9. Mespil Hotel, Mespil Street Dublin 4. Another great value 3 star hotel that punches above its weight. Location and value for money are big factors in Mespil Hotel being on this list. Beautifully situated on the banks of the Grand Canal, it’s still less than a brisk walk to all the city center attractions, including Grafton Street and Stephens Green. Modern decor and rooms with Wi-Fi, along with very good home-cooked meals and a great selection in the area are worth checking out when visiting the capital.

10. Osprey Hotel and Spa, Naas, County Kildare. The Osprey is a 4-star hotel recently opened, but it attracts attention for the quality of accommodation and facilities. 104 rooms including garden suites offer choice and luxury for couples and families. The hotel is very conveniently located in the Devoy Quarter, a redeveloped area of central Naas, and boasts two restaurants offering contrasting menus of modern and traditional dining. The package is complemented by great spa and leisure facilities, and the intimate nature of the setting and design will make you feel like you’re in a high-end boutique hotel.
