Travelling With Kids
I’m sure many of us have heard horror stories about being stuck in a car or on a plane for hours at a time with cranky kids. “Are we there yet?” “How much longer?” “Megan is ‘looking’ at me!” “I have to go to the bathroom – RIGHT NOW!” There are countless times when kids can get on our nerves while traveling. Here are some tips that can help ease your travel woes…
Create a TRAVEL SURVIVAL KIT full of small travel toys and games. Use a light-colored backpack or bag designed for this purpose. Include age-appropriate toys such as a sketchbook for preschool drawing fun, a magnetic letter board for toddlers, stickers, puzzles, or joke books for preschoolers. Interactive games can keep siblings happy like Brain Quest cards with age-appropriate puzzles and questions or even a simple deck of playing cards. These days, portable DVD players and handheld video games can keep kids busy and occupied for hours. If you take electronic stuff like Game-Gear, don’t forget to take spare batteries.
Snacks can be healthy carrot sticks, crackers, pretzels, cheese or fruit. Try to reduce the sugar content for less hyperactive children. Choose juice boxes and water bottles instead of canned soft drinks.
Take a CD of their favorite music as well as family music that you can all sing together on the go.
Make sure your child uses the toilet at every opportunity – before leaving home, at the airport before boarding the plane, right after a meal on the plane (multiple toilet sets can mean long waits) before you board. by bus to the hotel or on a sightseeing tour.
If you are going on holiday to the sea or on a cruise, of course suntan lotion cannot be missing, as well as a hat and sunglasses. In case of sunburn, also take skin cream. Don’t forget to pack fun bandages and a small first aid kit. Pack some stomach pills like Gravol for car/bus/plane trips and medicine for constipation or diarrhea.
Another thing to bring with you on your travels would be a history or fact book about the place you are visiting to keep the child engaged. Play games where you ask them to find the historical place you are visiting in the book, or an eye spy game where you can find different types of trees, flowers or birds. Even allowing them a disposable child-proof camera to take their own pictures would help keep the kid interested.
Make sure the children are well rested before the trip. Tired kids are cranky kids. And limit their intake of exotic foods to avoid stomach problems. It’s nice for kids to try and enjoy different types of fruit in another country, but too much papaya or avocado can wreak havoc on even the ripest of stomachs.
Many resorts are kid-friendly and can be a family traveler’s best friend. These “kid-friendly” locations offer everything a child or parent could want, from kid-oriented snack bars (serving pizza, hamburgers, and macaroni n’ cheese), kid-friendly pools, special computer rooms, sports and activities, to group games (where children can interact with others in their own age group). Many of these family resorts also offer babysitting services to give mom and dad some peace of mind.
Take a special security blanket or teddy bear with you to make traveling less scary for smaller children. Travel pillows, sun shades and a warm blanket can increase your child’s comfort level while sleeping in the car or on the plane and reduce the travel blues.
Traveling with children doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With careful planning, plenty of rest and controlled activities, parents and children can enjoy a holiday together.
