A Guide To Dessert And A Movie – "The Aviator" and His Flying Duck Cream Puffs

Need a new movie night theme? Whether it’s a night for two or a night full of friends, we’ve got you covered. Today’s movie is “The Aviator” starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the crazy aviator Howard Hughes and this is your guide.

There’s no better way to start a party than with the sophistication and glamor of an old Hollywood party. As you may or may not know, Howard Hughes didn’t just fly planes, he was once a filmmaker and dated many stars (like Kate Hepburn and Ava Gardner). So throw a party that would make even Jack Warner proud. Invite everyone to come dressed as their favorite Hollywood royalty. You can even send fun old-fashioned invitations if you don’t mind a little extra expense. A large CD CD is a must. There’s nothing that puts this movie in a better mood than this.

Since this is a sophisticated but fun party, you’ll need lots of pink and sparkling champagne. Shirley Temples are a great idea for non-alcoholic drinkers. All you have to do is get a bunch of cherry 7-Ups. Will it be enough. Just make sure you get some maraschino cherries to put in the glasses.

Today’s dessert will be deliciously charming, yet fun duck cakes. It’s a cute little dessert that goes with the flying element of the image and still brings out old Hollywood. Although they seem daunting, they are anything but. You can actually make these little babies ahead of time and refrigerate them until serving. Here is the recipe:

“Aviator’s Duck Cream Puffs”*

Ingredients: 1/8 cup strawberry jam, 4 eggs, ½ cup butter, 6.8 oz sugar-free instant vanilla pudding, 1 cup water, ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 3 and ½ cups milk, and confectioners’ sugar.

1) Heat the butter, water and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and mix until a smooth ball forms. Then remove from heat and let stand for about 5 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time. Beat well until smooth and glossy.

2) Cut a small tip in the corner of the Ziploc Storage bag. Fill the bag with the batter on a greased 15 x 17 baking sheet. Make 3 dozen 1 inch long hook shapes and at the end make a small doll for each duck head. Bake at 400 degrees for about 8 minutes (they are done until golden brown). Cool on wire racks.

3) Drop 36 level tablespoons of batter onto another greased baking sheet. Form tears from the dough. Bake at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes (they should be golden brown again). Remove to wire racks.

4) Mix the milk with the pudding mix in a medium bowl for 1 minute only. Put the bowl covered with plastic in the fridge for at least an hour.

5) Cut off the top 1/3 of each wafer. Remove any soft dough. Put the filling on the bottom of the cake pan. Top with strawberry jam. Cut the top in half lengthwise for the wings. Place the wings in the filling. Insert the necks into the filling. Dust with sifted confectioners’ sugar.

6) Enjoy yourself with all the glamor and sophistication you can get.

Now it’s time to serve the little ducklings and sit back to enjoy the motion picture. So pop in that DVD labeled “The Aviator” and let’s get started. I know Leonardo Dicaprio is in this picture, but he’s good, trust me. This movie has something for everyone to enjoy: costumes, beautiful colors, excellent actors, tragic drama and lots of excitement. What else could you wish for? Here I have listed ten things you should watch out for while watching this movie:

Probable Page Break1) Leonard’s butt-Didn’t see it coming even though I told you to watch out for it. Print, print. Well, there it is in all its glory (along with it surrounded by pee jars). Really attractive.

2) A Really Scary Plane Crash- It’s scary…and not just make the kids turn their heads scary, but let’s all turn our heads scary. Pretty cool though…hey mom, look at all that blood.

3) Blinding paparazzi bulbs- Yeah, all those flashing bulbs hurt. I would look elsewhere, but I don’t want to miss any part.

4) Kate Hepburn- Okay, we all know that Cate Blanchett could even play a dog and look like a real one. Even if she’s not playing the dog, we believe she’s Kate through and through (even if she doesn’t look anything like her).

5) Terribly dirty janitor – even I would get obsessive compulsive just looking at this guy. Have you seen his nails? Ick.

6) Fantastically Huge Trial – Every good movie has a standout speech that makes you cry, cheer and root for the madman. Need I say more? That’s another point for the little guy!

7) Two Lines by Gwen Stefani – Listen to Two Lines and not be impressed. While it looks the part, I’m glad they stuck to two lines.

8) Crazy Big Band Singer- I am amazed at the sheer amount of energy this guy has. It should have been an award-winning performance. It will make you laugh like you can’t see straight. In a weird way, it’s so funny it’s right.

9) Clothes Burning Bonfire- This is the craziest bonfire scene I’ve ever seen. The music is crazy, but it still makes me want to join Hughes and burn all the clothes. Until you realize that you are naked in front of the room with no clothes on. That’s embarrassing!

10) When he tells his date not to eat too much ice cream- The whole thing freaks me out. The title of this one should also come to mind. How old is the girl? Really weird and I don’t want to know.

With all these tips, your movie night will be the talk of the town. Everyone will be talking about ducks and freaks until next year. A job well done!
