Zone Blocking For Youth Football Teams

There are many differences between youth football players and College, Pro and High School players. To say the difference is night and day would not do justice to how different they are. It would be like the beauty differences of Miss America and the 1000 pound bearded lady at the state fair.

College, professional and even high school players practice 6 days a week and play their games on the 7th. Most of these guys train 20-30 hours every week, youth soccer teams train 4-8 hours every week. Pro, College and High School players have been playing the game for 7-25 years, they have the basics, they know the game. Youth soccer players have 1-2 years of experience and many youth teams are made up of mostly kids who have never played before. Most youth soccer players don’t know the difference between a 3 technique and a footstool. Professional, college and high school players are ages 16-35, can move faster, have better body control, and retain and process much more information than youth soccer players. Pro, College and High School teams cut weak players, they are the best of the best. Every day, pro and college teams cut kids who were top players on their youth and high school teams. Even high schools cut weaker players, send even weaker kids to JV or Reserve teams.

Pro, College and even some high school players are taught by coaches who coach for a living. Most of them spend 50-70 hours a week learning their craft and most have 10-15 years of experience playing the game. This is comparable to the amount of experience and time a youth coach can spend developing themselves as a coach, which for most people is not even possible to attend a single weekend coaching clinic or purchase a single coaching book or DVD. . The difference in coaching expertise levels is simply huge, but will a youth coach with no experience in complex zone blocking teach it to others?

In short, professional, college and even most high school teams are made up of athletic greats compared to the typical youth football player who will never play high school football let alone get a sniff of college or professional football. Youth teams are made up of very limited players, you can’t send kids down to JV, Reserve or Frosh teams and cut them. In fact, you will be playing them, some will probably even start on your offensive line. While I was blessed with talent on some of my teams, others had offensive lines that looked like characters from “Land of Unlucky Toys.”

By the time kids get to high school, most of the really weak players have stopped playing because they’ve realized that football just isn’t their game. But today in your youth football team, these kids are still playing, still trying to figure out how to play and if it’s their game. At the youth level in most leagues, everyone has to play something, and most often you’ll have some unathletic players playing on the offensive line. That playing, not being cut or sent to another team.

Professional, college, and high school teams don’t have to play all of their kids, most youth teams require you to play at least a few games with everyone. These less athletic kids then play a position that greatly affects every single play (offensive line) and go zone block? Okay, that’s great when I’m the other team’s defensive coordinator, but terrible when I’m the running back or the poor guy’s dad on the zone blocking team.

This is how perfectly good young football players freeze up in the game and end up being part of the 70% of young players who never play high school football. It’s a real shame and it’s the main reason I wrote the book, did all the clinics and made the DVD. Too many good kids have missed out on playing football because of bad coaches and terrible schemes, it’s no wonder so many high school and youth football programs have a love-hate relationship.

On the technical side, the cornerstone of zone schemes is the “combo” block, where the offensive linemen first push the defensive linemen, then after a good move, get out of the block to then block the defender. This block mind is blocked based on the type of defensive line that the offensive linemen can see and recognize, which often includes calling the line. That would be quite a lot to ask of a 9-year-old young player who may be playing his first game. Most kids this age are still trying to figure out how to block players within 1 foot of them and make sure they remember to block on offense and tackle on defense.

Most high school teams can’t even block zones well with spring football, year round football practice, great offensive line coaches and 6 day a week practices. And are you going to do it successfully with youth players? With squad sizes of 24-25 for many teams, your worst athletes play offensive line. So you ask this weaker player to correctly recognize the front, execute the correct line, make an effective double team block, get the move on the double team block, at the same time spy the defender, then know when to peel off. at the right time and block a fast and strong defender “in space” on the run in the same play?

So one of your least athletic kids is going to spy, track and block the other teams fastest and most athletic linebacker in open space after he engages other linemen? Wow, that’s going to be quite the feat akin to building an atomic bomb out of a few leftover juice cans and some old mothballs, good luck getting it all done. If you can teach it at the youth level, you have a select football team, you should be playing in a national championship game, and as a coach you should be coaching the O-Line in the NFL. Zone blocking requires GREAT coaching, lots of time, excellent athletic lines, and smart smart veteran football players who can recognize lines and have perfect timing, none of which are in abundance at the youth football level.

Simple rule blocking with angles and overwhelming numbers in limited space is what works within the constraints of youth football and is what we teach in the book and DVD. Zone blocking fails and frustrates kids and coaches. I wasn’t surprised that this zone-blocking suggestion came from one of those one-dimensional, fail-every-time youth coaches who use such a failed and useless tactic as “attack the middle”. He probably uses the famous catchphrase “Hit Somebody” and runs kids to death at soccer practice, then wonders why his teams can’t win any games.

There’s no doubt that when this team loses, he’s the one who blames it all on a lack of talent (every year) or “the kids just didn’t want it bad enough”. I’m tired of these people, they destroy so many kids and teams. Unfortunately we see too many coaches like this in our game and it is one of the main reasons why over 70% of youth football players never play high school football, it’s a shame.

When coaching youth football, your job is to choose a scheme that will work with the level of talent, athleticism, maturity, practice time, and coaching ability at your disposal. Playing a youth football team trying for a zone block would be like shooting fish in a barrel, the poor guys, the horror, the horror.
