Super Mom – Strategies for Safe, Torment Free Lice Management for All Moms!

“Mom, the teacher said I had LICE!”

Funny how such a simple and innocent statement can make your blood run cold.

For some reason, head lice seem to be synonymous with Back-To-School, at least for young children. I’ve always wondered why this happens… Where do they hide during the summer? Since they travel from head to head, who brought them to the classroom or nursery in the first place?

Wherever and whenever they come from, when your child brings them home, one thing is for sure – they are a real pain! Yum! Coarse! There is nothing good about them! And for a few weeks they will take over your home and free time.

The best way to handle these pesky little critters is to be calm and methodical. Easier said than done, I know, but it’s the only way to keep my sanity/

There are many ways to get rid of lice. Personally, I prefer the good old brushing method.

Pesticide-based products are harmful to you and your baby’s health, and there is plenty of evidence that they cause lice to become resistant. This simply means that you will need more poison in stronger and higher doses to get rid of those nasty little bugs.

Pesticides also have no effect on nits, only live adult lice, and you’ll need to reapply at least three times to keep calm. This is because nits take about 10 days to hatch and another 10 days to mature and reproduce.

Here are some tips to help you manage lice naturally and effectively

1. Stay calm

Yes, those little bugs are a nuisance and you can’t help but feel disgusted by them. And when you see them crawling around your baby’s head… well, let’s just say it’s not a pretty sight!

But there is no need to panic as this will only make things harder for you and your baby to handle. Take a deep breath and prepare for battle!

Remember, lice don’t care about the social economy and are just as likely to plant their nits on the head of a clean rich child as on the head of a street child. In fact, lice prefer clean heads because the hair shaft is easier to hold. Dirty greasy hair will not please a louse trying to hatch a batch of nits.

2. Make it an educational experience

When my five year old came home with lice, she had a lot of questions. So we got to the computer and watched some videos. She was intrigued and asked a lot of interesting questions.

She wasn’t mad for a second about the little bugs crawling on her head. It made combing them a much more pleasant experience. When I combed out some live ones, she looked at them and was fascinated.

This is certainly much easier than handling a child who is terrified of the whole experience. Remember that your child will learn from you.

3. Get rid of all the lice!

Put your child in front of an educational program on TV and do their hair!

There are lots of methods you can use to numb or suffocate lice to get them out of your hair easily. I personally use a natural rosemary-based mouse, so it smells nice.

Using a special comb for nits, methodically comb the hair from one side to the other, combing it to the ends of the hair, frequently wiping the comb on a clean towel. Reverse direction and crest again.

Brush again from front to back and finally from neck to forehead.

This process will take at least a good half hour, depending on the length and thickness of your child’s hair, but you need to be patient and diligent. It is the most effective way to remove nits and lice.

You’ll want to repeat combing at least two more times, at three-day intervals, because it’s easy to leave one small nit behind. And the last thing you want is another infestation.

Once combed, you can coat your baby’s head with coconut or olive oil, put a shower cap on it and wrap it in a scarf. Leave overnight and rinse in the morning.

4. Clean laundry and personal items

This is the part of lice removal that can become a real nightmare. You feel so attacked and dirty that you want to do a complete spring cleaning. Strip all bedding and pillows. Wash and dry on high heat. Vacuum the bed, pillows, rugs, etc. Place all stuffed animals in a plastic bag and keep sealed for 2 weeks. Yuck! Just writing this list is exhausting me!

Carrying out all these household tasks is important, mainly for your peace of mind, because lice cannot live long on a human head. But don’t get carried away. You should devote 10% of your time and energy to cleaning the house and 90% to the actual move.

Lice are enough to make you want to pull your hair out, literally, but don’t let them get under your skin.

5. Get rid of lice once and for all!

Comb your baby’s head every 2 to 3 days for at least 10 days to make sure you get rid of all the nits. This process is time consuming but worth it.

You can also apply rosemary or tea tree oil to your child behind the ears and at the base of the neck, which are favorite places for lice to attach their nits. Lice do not like either of these smells and will stay away. You can also find a rosemary shield or conditioning spray as a protective measure. This is a good thing to do if your child hasn’t gotten lice yet, but others in her class have.

You may also want to put your child’s hair back in a ponytail for a few weeks to minimize the chance of them catching lice from a friend. Make sure she also knows not to share hats, hairbrushes or other personal items with friends, which little girls just love!

Before you cry victory, check all the heads in your family to make sure everyone is clear.

While there’s really nothing fun about dealing with lice, you can keep your sanity and get rid of them without resorting to shaving your child’s head! For some reason, some children never have lice. I can’t say we were that lucky. But if you deal with things calmly and methodically, you will get rid of those cheaters and get back to living the life you love!
