What Equipment You Need to Maintain a 3 Acre Homestead

There are a few pieces of equipment that are absolutely necessary to have in order to keep your property in top condition. Of course, there are plenty of “toys” that would be nice to have, but the cost of buying and maintaining them is much greater than just renting them out once or twice a year. Depending on how much of your land is taken up by beauty-only grass, how much pasture or garden space there is, or even chicken or sheep pens, will determine what equipment you actually need. All properties need some type of lawn or garden tractor, unless you’re a marathon runner and want to push the mower over an acre or two twice a week in the spring. A general-purpose tractor with an engine of 20 HP or less and a 42- or 48-inch mower can handle three acres of lawn easily. Attachments such as spring-loaded rakes to facilitate lawn aeration or a lightweight snow plow for winter can all make your job easier. Grass rollers, seed drills, discs and harrows, rakes and even mini piston end loader buckets can be purchased from a variety of tractor and subcompact tractor manufacturers.

When shopping, you’ll find that tractors fall into several different categories based on their capabilities. Lawn tractors are basically large lawn mowers that can pull around a small trailer, leaf rake, or maybe shovel some snow. The tractor will weigh more and have stronger and larger components. The tractor might have a slightly larger engine, a cast iron rear box, and maybe even handle a snow thrower attachment. A sub-compact tractor at around $12,000 or so is even heavier, can use wheel weights or weighted tires, a front loader and backhoe attachments, and mow 5 acres more easily. The frames are also much more durable and can easily move mountains of snow. If you own a stable for horses or plant a large garden, a subcompact tractor can handle all these cleaning tasks without breaking a sweat.

Marking a long trailer is also a godsend when clearing leaves, moving soil, hauling gravel, or any other yard work. It’s much easier to load up a trailer with all your spring flowering plants and move from bed to bed along with shovels and soil accessories than it is to carry it all by hand. Moving buckets of water to pens or moving stones or firewood – these are all tasks that a small trailer can handle. My trailer is now over twenty years old and apart from the occasional touch up of paint and grease is still going strong.

A gas leaf blower and vacuum are also real time savers. From blowing sidewalks and patios to removing leaves from flower beds, a gas leaf blower does the trick. If you have any type of hedge or shaped trees, electric hedge trimmers will make this job a breeze. Trimming a hundred feet of hedge by hand is no fun. A good wheel is an often overlooked tool. Don’t buy one of those $29 barrows. If you pay around $100 or so, you’re in the right neighborhood. Oak handles, a heavy tub or metal (prefer poly, never rusts) and a ten inch tire is the bare minimum. Mine is about twelve years old now and I’ve only changed the cranks once.

I own a fairly large wooded area and the grassy areas also have many trees. These only produce tons of fallen branches and leaves each year. I bought a small chipper for 3″ and smaller limbs and it does a good job. Anything bigger than 3″ is cut into firewood. This machine makes a lot of mulch for us so it was worth it.

Rotary tilling my garden once a year didn’t seem like a justification for buying an exercise bike that would sit for 11 and a half months of the year. The daily rental is about $45, so for $45 I get our garden and rental store to maintain it all year.

A washing machine is another great tool for the average household. Washing decks or sidewalks, siding or barn floors is all much easier with an electric washer. They are relatively inexpensive and do a great job. Maintenance basically consists of draining the antifreeze when in storage and checking the engine oil.

If you own these tools, you can pretty much get by. As time goes on and you can afford it, adding more tools to your tractor, such as a post hole digger or dozer blade, can make even bigger jobs easier and faster.
