Why Does My Hula Hoop Keep Falling?

Why does your hula hoop keep falling to the ground like gravity just multiplied 10 times!?

Feel like giving up?

Have you thrown your hula hoop across the room in frustration, causing utter destruction in its path?

Well don’t worry, I’ve been there!

Some people just pick it up and can spin it for ages (they were probably the same people you hated at school).

However, we mere mortals can sometimes have a harder time.

Over the past 4 years I have taught hula hoop fitness to women of all ages, shapes and sizes. Sometimes it seems some people just can’t get the ‘talent’…or so they thought! It usually just takes a bit of tweaking and they do it like magic!. If you are in this position, I will describe some of the possible reasons why your hula hoop may be falling. Read more…

Reason #1 – It’s the wrong size.

If you have one of those kiddie hula hoops from your local supermarket, then FORGET IT! They are too small and too light. You need a weighted adult size hula hoop, you can get them on ebay or amazon and possibly local suppliers, just google “adult weighted hoop” and see what comes up.

I personally don’t like the really heavy ones (2lb or more) I have 2 of them and I never use them because they hurt and bruise me, I can usually only hoop for 5 or 10 minutes. them.

I recommend hoops that are 2 pounds or less and are wrapped with gaffer tape that is fabric based and will stick to your clothing and skin.

Reason #2 – Bad technique!

If you’re struggling to keep the hoop spinning, it may be because you haven’t mastered the technique yet! If you’re stuck in the 50s and still doing circular hip movements, you need to get with the times!

Here is the proper technique..

– Stand with one foot in front of the other (it doesn’t matter which foot)

– Push the hula hoop with good force around your waist and make sure it is straight

– Start rocking your hips back and forth, shifting your weight from the front leg to the back.

Please try to avoid large hip circles. Attempting such a hoop will NOT be successful.

Think of it as a push and pull movement where you push your abs forward and your lower back back.

Keep your shoulders back and down and your head still… try to avoid flapping!

If the hoop keeps falling, try the hoop faster. I call it double time hooping.. that should be enough!

Reason #3 – Your clothes are holding you back

It sounds a bit random, but it’s true!

If you wear the wrong type of clothes, it will not be easy for you. Let me give you some examples of clothing to avoid when hooping.

– Loose t-shirts, sweaters, cardigans

– Shorts or jeans with a high waist

– Tracksuits/workout clothes that are made of nylon or non-natural fibers.

Wear tight-fitting clothing, such as vests or T-shirts, and tight pants or leggings made from natural fibers, such as cotton. I would recommend as a beginner to wear sneakers or something to cover your feet. If the hoop is falling a lot, you don’t want bruised knuckles!
