Ten Stimulating Activities to Calm Fussy Babies

When a baby is fussy, parents usually try feeding, using a pacifier, or moving to calm them down. However, most do not think of providing stimulation. 1) Teach the child the vocabulary. Show them the word and point from left to right as you say it. If the word is “ears,” say, “This is the word “ears” as you point from left to right. Show the child your ears and say, “These are my ears.” Touch your children’s ears and say, “These are your ears. You hear with your ears.” Then help the child touch his ears and show him the word again as you say it.

2) Talk to the child in a happy, high-pitched voice. Smile and hold the baby close to your face.

3) Teach prepositions using objects, body parts and actions. Say, “I’m holding a red cup over my head. Now I’m holding a blue hat over my head.” Play each line as you say it. Prepositions help to understand the meaning of many sentences.

4) Teach logic formulas. For babies younger than six months, one parent can hold the baby upright and say “one, two” while gently rocking the baby from side to side. Instead of saying “three,” bring the child closer to the other parent’s face. This parent smiles and says “boo”. In the same way, repeat the “one, two, bang” pattern often. Kids will eventually figure out a pattern. You can do this with many different patterns. End each pattern by bringing the child closer to the other parent’s face while they smile and say a word to the child.

5) Provide a change of environment. Take the child outside and talk to him in a happy high voice about what he sees.

6) Play in front of the mirror. Describe all of the child’s senses. Talk about what the child looks at, hears, tastes, touches or feels.

7) Listen to music and dance with the baby. Try many different types of music.

8) Play an imitation game with the baby. A simple game is to open your mouth. Be happy and excited when the baby opens his mouth.

9) Count the dots. Use a white board or paper and count the dots as the baby or toddler makes them. You will count the moment the baby makes a dot.

10) Teach the child new words using actions. Go and hold the baby, take very large steps and say “big steps”, then take very small steps and say “small steps”. Talk to the child at all times. Next, take fast or slow steps and talk to the baby the whole time. For older babies and toddlers, allow the child to walk beside you and encourage them to follow your lead and take similar steps.
