How Early Childhood Education Can Shape a Child’s World

It’s no secret that education is the key to a successful career. Parents clearly know this, which is why choosing the right school with excellent grades is so important.

A child’s first impression of schooling and education can and will shape your child’s view of whether or not they enjoy learning.

It is strange to think that your child, who is learning and showing you his achievements every day, is afraid of learning, or rather is failing in school.

First impressions really last a lifetime. If your child has been pressured to learn, or tasted the bitterness of failure – or been told they have failed – in their early childhood, it will leave a lasting impression on their young mind.

So what can we do to ensure that our children have a positive experience with the education system?

Consider the type of education you are enrolling your child in. Some parents don’t always realize that there is a choice when it comes to education. And to clarify, I’m not talking about private versus public.

In some areas of Europe (especially in Switzerland) young children do not start school until the age of seven. That’s two years later than most school systems. This is because children learn through play, which gives them two more years to “play”.

Children who start education later, on average, outperform those who started at age five when tested at the beginning of secondary school.

Research has shown that it actually hurts children (especially boys) to hold a pen or pencil the “correct” way under the age of seven.

So it’s no surprise that boys have been underachieving in written subjects in recent years. It hurt to write when they were younger, and as teenagers they still associate that pain with writing. This then disables their English, which is the only item that will help them unlock the others.

However, schools that start “formal” education at the tender age of five have begun to address these issues. They now do warm-up exercises before writing to help ease the cramps. This is a step in the right direction.

When you go through homework or if you have any study material at home, make sure you do so in short bursts. The human brain struggles to focus on one thing for more than twenty minutes at a time – and that’s adults.

Make sure you only use positive words of praise when helping them understand, and implement a reward system like stickers and stamps.
