Starting Baby on Rice Cereal
There seems to be a lot of debate about when is the best time to start solid foods. Older schools of thought start giving babies rice cereal mixed in bottles with formula or breast milk as early as 4 weeks old, while newer schools of thought believe that babies should start getting fat at 4 months of age.
If children are introduced to solid food earlier than 4 months, not only will the child’s digestive system not be able to handle it, but with increasing age there is also a risk of allergies and even obesity. Rice cereal is safe to introduce at 4 months of age. Your baby should be eating more solid food by 6 months, as breast milk or formula is not enough for his needs.
The first portion of rice cereal for a baby
1. Your child’s first portion of rice cereal will probably be only 1 tablespoon at first. Remember that eating food with a spoon is a new experience for your baby.

You can mix the cereal with breast milk, formula or water. Breast milk or formula adds a nutritional boost to the meal and is strongly recommended.
Important note: Rice cereal mixed with breast milk turns into a “soup” after standing for a while as the enzymes in the breast milk break down the cereal. It is still safe to use.
