Jeffrey Archer’s "Old Love" Redefines Love Story

“Old Love” by Jeffrey Archer is a unique love story of two brilliant students of English literature from Oxford. Archer explores the theme of love from a completely unusual point of view. The performance is fiercely honest as he portrays the chronic sense of envy and rivalry between two sworn arch-rivals from Oxford University: William Hatchard and Philippa Jameson. At first, the aggressive competition unsettles their teacher Simon Jakes. In their constant intellectual debates, Philippa confronted William’s deep, confident voice with her boldness in high heels. The mutual hatred was absolute. Their keenly perceptive and analytical minds refused to be subordinated to one another. This fierce sense of competition has really allowed them to outperform everyone else in the field. Given the 1930s backdrop, to him she was “the stupid woman” and he was “the arrogant man”. But in a strange way of fate, an unusual love story should blossom between the most bitter academic rivals!

This rivalry gained sickening intensity when both of them stood out as toppers in the final degree examination. Charles oldham shakespeare essay writing competition fueled this fire of passionate jealousy and it became a matter of life and death for each to defeat the other. There were liberal exchanges of snide remarks between them to belittle each other. However, things take a dramatic turn when William unwittingly learns of Filipina’s father (who was a vicar) dying of cancer, as well as his secret dream of having his daughter study at Oxford and win Charles Oldham price. The sight of his proud and powerful opponent’s silent sobs caused sudden feelings of empathy in his gut. Overcoming his uncertain doubts, he offered to accompany her to her village for the funeral ceremony. As they set out on their journey to her village, they hold hands for the first time and discover a new bond of friendship. On their return to Oxford, they spontaneously interacted, which restored Philippa to her normal competitive spirit. She slowly discovers the growth of her newfound intense attraction to William. He secretly enjoys this interesting conversion in the vicar’s daughter.

The transformation of hate into love has always been a compelling subject in itself, and Archer makes it palatable by using sparkling wit in their conversation. They visit Stratford and eat together. But their first date was far from ordinary: a unique mixture of warmth and intellectual antagonism! If this instinctive antagonism had triggered a strong feeling of hatred before, now it drew them closer. In fact, this killer instinct became a delirious source of amusement for both of them. Archer forces the reader to question, could intense hatred really be an expression of hidden attraction?

Anyway, on the way back from Stratford, things take a strange turn. On the way back to Oxford, Phillipa and William had to spend the night in the car because the gas gauge read empty. The former obviously didn’t miss the chance to express doubt about the brain power of a person who couldn’t even read gasoline! The next day, William told her the reason he let the car run out of gas: With a rare sense of humor, he said: “My father told me that if I spent the night with the barmaid, I should simply order an extra pint of beer. , but if I spent the night with the vicar’s daughter I would have to marry her.” He got down on one knee and said, “Will you marry me if I win Charles Oldham? Philippa replied that “as there is absolutely no fear of that happening, I can safely say yes…” When William told her he loved her, she told him not to show his face in Somerville again unless he won . Charles Oldham. Readers wonder if the writer will reveal Philippa’s secret wish to marry him even at the cost of losing Charles Oldham! Why else would Filipa have tears in her eyes when the girl told her she had won? It was a moment of crisis for her, for between the conflicting emotions of ambition and love the latter prevailed in her heart, and for once the proud girl confessed, “I love nothing in the world so well as you; Is not it strange? ?”

However, when she found out that William was the joint winner, her pugnacious spirit returned as she said “I take you for pity”, to which William replied “I will give in after much persuasion…” They were locked in a passionate embrace and after never being apart each other for more than a few hours. Oddly enough, their honeymoon in Athens ended in a bitter dispute over the relative importance of Doric and Ionic architecture!

Later in life, this constant battle of wits kept their romance from descending into boredom and banality. Their serious research work and creative activities, albeit in different fields, kept them deeply connected. After three years “with a well-received D.Phils”, they moved on to higher education in tandem. But their fierce encounters continued and their sharp wit at each other’s expense flashed across Oxford dinner tables. However, those who understood their love envied their unique relationship! They were childless, but their life was not without taste.

On their way home after the gala dinner (he was announced as a joint professor), their heated argument about Proust’s monumental work took such an intimidating turn that a policeman near Philippa asked, “Is everything all right, madam?” “No she isn’t,” William stated, “this woman has been attacking me for over 30 years and to this day the police have done pitifully little to protect me.” Yet beneath this apparent antagonism, their bond grew stronger every year. Interestingly, their intense love was inseparable from their fervent intellectual antagonism, which lent their relationship a special aura. When Philippa became a Dame of the British Empire, William referred to her as the “Old Lady” he now had to live with. It is the bittersweet flavor of their love that defines their marriage.

Philippa’s most irritating habit for William was her determination to complete “The Times” crossword every morning before he arrived at the breakfast table. One fine June morning, William studied the clue and filled in the eight fields that Philippa had left incomplete. Philippa immediately replied that there was no such word. To Philippa’s delight the word “Why Wham” cannot be found in the shorter Oxford Dictionary. William assured her that the word could be found in the OED on his desk, made for a scholar like himself. William left the breakfast table with sharp remarks about Filipina’s limited knowledge of English and that she would have to eat humble pie at Somerville’s Gaudy Feast while reading the collected works of John Skelton…

William left with a sigh, kissing his wife on the cheek and wishing he had lost Charles Oldham. Philippa replied that she did, because at the time it was very inappropriate to announce a woman as the only winner! As Ms. Philippa closed the front door and walked into the kitchen, she suddenly suffered a solitary heart attack. She called out hoarsely to William, but to no avail. The news of her death is given, and the story ends on a note of dark humor in Sir William’s (who shot himself with his pistol) suicide note: “Forgive me, but I had to let her know”. In one hand he held a volume of John Skelton’s work with the words “Why Wham” neatly underlined, fingers stiff and cold around him. Such a strange ending subtly hints at the essence of the special relationship this couple shared, rising above the great marriage vow of “UNTIL DEATH DO US PART.” Archer’s love story stands out because death could not part Sir William and Lady Philippa! Even as William followed his wife to her grave, he felt the need to mask the unbreakable bond they shared and the unbearable loneliness he would feel without her… he does it with a wry sense of humor!
