5 Great Games to Teach Your Kids the Books of the Bible
I believe that one of the main goals of any Sunday School teacher should be for his class to know all the books of the Bible by heart. If we want our children to grow up to be experts in God’s Word, they need to know where each book is and have an idea of its main characters. Here are 5 fun games you can play to get your kids on the road to learning more about the greatest book of all time.
Play:
You will need to make a set of “Bible Cards”. You can easily do this on the computer using color graphics or simply print out the names of all the books of the Bible on some index cards. Some games use points. So you’ll want to print point values of 100 to 500 on the back of the cards in random order. The kids REALLY like to score points for their teams. Finally, I recommend laminating all cards for long-term use.
5 great games
1. OT/NT shifting – Simply get 2 boxes and label one “Old Testament” and the other “New Testament”. Grab 10 or more Bible book cards and set the timer for 30 seconds. When you say “Go”, give the child the opportunity to correctly sort the cards into the appropriate boxes. For each one he gets right, add up the points for your team. As the children learn their books better, you can give them more cards to sort.
2. Order now! – Get a clothesline and some pegs. Give the child a set of cards with the books of the Bible that you would like them to organize. You may want to limit it to 5 cards to start with until they are familiar with the Bible. In this game, points are added only on cards that have been placed out of order. The team with the fewest points wins. You may consider setting a time limit for this game.
3. Catch and find – Grab a bucket and put some Bible cards in it. Let the child come and draw a card. Give him 15 seconds to find the book in the Bible. If he is successful, he will score points on the card for his team.
4. Name the character – Plays the same as #3 above, but instead of finding a book in the Bible, the child has to say one main character that is in the book they chose.
5. Guess the book – Spread 5 Bible cards on the table. Read a Bible verse from one of the books and give the child a chance to guess which book on the table it comes from. If the guess was correct, reward points on the back of the card. Continue reading the verses for the other cards until there are 2. Lay out more cards to make it harder.
When it comes to points in the game, usually a kid from the class will come in and be my shooter. Have fun!
