ADHD – 5 Steps to Successful Living
If you have recently been diagnosed with ADHD, you may be confused. You probably ask a lot of questions like “What is ADHD?”, “Does this mean I have a disability?” or “How will it affect my life?” For adults, receiving this diagnosis can be even more confusing. After all, it’s a childhood disease, right? I was diagnosed at 27. I have found these 5 steps to be essential to successfully living with ADHD.
Realize that ADHD is not the same for everyone. This is a “spectrum disorder”. Diagnosis is made by observing various symptoms. Psychiatrists talk to patients about their habits. If a patient exhibits multiple symptoms and the symptoms affect two areas of their life (ie, work and home), they receive a diagnosis of ADHD. The diversity of symptoms means that the symptoms are not the same for everyone.
This awareness is key to successfully managing ADHD. Coping with ADHD requires dealing with many different symptoms. For example, many people with ADHD experience deficits in time management and task completion. However, one person may work in a factory while another owns a company. The same time management strategies may not work for both people. Realizing that ADHD is different for everyone will allow you to find strategies to help you.
Realize that ADHD is not a disability. When I was first diagnosed with ADHD, I was afraid that I was now disabled. After all, isn’t ADHD a mental disorder? Then I read Edison’s gene. Edison Gene explains that ADHD is not a mental disorder at all. ADHD is actually a set of genetic traits that first hunters need. Over the centuries, these genetic traits have not disappeared from humans, even as society has changed. Modern society has decided that these traits are a mental disorder.
Be aware that ADHD comes with as many advantages as disadvantages. Modern society emphasizes the disadvantages of this state. This is necessary for classification as a mental disorder. However, every disadvantage has several advantages. For example, people with ADHD are often highly creative and able to learn very quickly. These are just two examples of the potential benefits of ADHD. People like Ty Pennington, Sir Richard Branson and Howie Mandel have used the benefits of ADHD to their advantage.
Find a great psychiatrist. Chances are you got your diagnosis from a psychiatrist; however, make sure you see the right psychiatrist. ADHD treatment is a long-term affair. The medical community now recognizes ADHD as a lifelong condition. Regular visits to a psychiatrist may be required. You need a psychiatrist who has experience with ADHD and is willing to listen to your situation.
Educate yourself about ADHD. Education is the key to being successful at anything. Educating yourself about ADHD symptoms, medications, alternative treatment options, and coping strategies will give you a toolkit. You can then use these tools to manage your own ADHD. You don’t have to become an ADHD specialist. You don’t want to second guess your psychiatrist. You want to gain the knowledge needed to identify ADHD coping strategies and apply them to your situation.
Three of these five steps are actually implementation. Realizing that ADHD is not the same for everyone. This condition is not a disability and offers benefits to help you adjust your focus. If you tell yourself every day that you are disabled, you will consider yourself disabled. If you focus on the benefits of ADHD, you will find ways to take advantage of them. Once you focus on the positives of ADHD, the right psychiatrist can help you find a combination of medications and coping strategies to help you achieve your goals. Personal education can help you identify new or improved coping strategies for ADHD. You can either try these new strategies or use their ideas to formulate your own. While ADHD is a lifelong condition, these five steps will help you live successfully with ADHD.
