Getting Ready For Baby – A Newborn Checklist

Having everything you need for baby ready to go before you bring your newborn home is a wise thing for a new parent to do. But what to get a newborn baby?

Keep in mind that you will never need as much as you think you will. Be realistic. Do you really need a bottle warmer? If you are a parent who can afford it and want it even if you don’t need it, then go for it. Just know that in a few months you’ll probably be reselling it because you’ve realized that some things are more trouble than they’re worth.

I recommend setting up a nursery with supplies in place, clothes washed and ready to go three to four weeks before the due date. That way, even if your baby arrives early, you’ll be prepared. It’s so much easier to come home from the hospital when you know you have everything you need close at hand.

Below is a list of essentials for your child’s comfort and safety.

NECESSARY EQUIPMENT

• Stroller, Co-Sleeper/Crib or Pack and Play for your bedroom.

For the first 12 weeks, you will feed your baby every 2 to 4 hours, so when you have him in your room, you won’t have to shuffle back and forth to the nursery. It’s also nice to keep your baby snuggled up and close. Your newborn just came from a compact space, so they like to be comfortable. I recommend using the stroller instead of a crib until the baby can roll over or there is no more room for him to stretch out. You’ll only need it for the first few months, but you’ll be really glad you have it!

• Baby cot and mattress

When your baby outgrows the stroller, it’s time for a crib. Make sure you buy one that meets current safety standards, and make sure the mattress fits snugly to the sides so the baby can’t wiggle or get wedged under it.

• Children’s scarf

Every mom I know LOVES a wrap or some type of carrier. It allows you to be mobile and still have your baby physically connected to you. Make sure it provides proper neck and head support and is made of washable fabric. It should feel comfortable on you and allow you to carry the baby facing inward or outward. You’ll want to have it facing inward at first. As she gets older, she will want to look outside to see the world.

• Changing pad

This is a plastic mat that you put down when changing the baby. You can put a towel on top or use a blanket so that your child does not feel the cold plastic. If you’re on a budget, get a changing table as well, although it’s not really a must. The time you will use it is very short.

• Baby carriage/car seat/pushchair

I’m a big fan of ‘the system’. It’s a carrier that connects to car and stroller attachments. They also make it easier for you and your baby to get from home to the car and to the stroller. Be sure to have the car seat checked or fitted at the hospital where you will give birth. You won’t be able to leave the maternity ward with your newborn without the right car seat, so if possible, have it installed 1 week before the due date.

• High chair

You won’t need a high chair until your baby is at least 5-6 months old, so you may want to hold off on this purchase for a while.

• Baby Bumbo Sitter

Once your baby is about 3 months old and has some neck control, great! They can sit in it for absolutely everything.

• Baby bath

It is important to start with a small bath because in a small space with a little water you will gain confidence in how to hold and handle the baby. I love the ones that have a strap because they have no neck control until they are 3 or 4 months old. The strap helps keep them in place.

• Bouncy/vibrating seat and/or swing

Having your baby somewhere safe while you are cooking or getting dressed is vital and babies love the movement it provides.

OTHER EQUIPMENT MUST BE CONSIDERED

• Large comfortable rocking chair

• Sound machine – Great for helping to calm your baby. They play sounds from the mother’s womb, water sounds, nature sounds, etc. They also come in soft toys.

• Baby Monitoring System – There are many options these days, including video monitoring systems so you can see your baby in his crib. Two monitors or more are a must if you have multiple levels in your home or your master bedroom is on a completely different level. There are also remote pager systems so you can clip it on and listen as you go from room to room.

• Breast pump and accessories

• Nursing Pillows – I like the Boppy. Even a baby can use it, so it serves multiple purposes. However, the Brest Friend provides good support and leverage and has a strap that you can tie around you if you need to be mobile. It also has a zipped pocket to store things.

• CD player with headphones and audio books – for you when you are awake at night with your child

• Baby Car Mirror – Since babies are rear-facing until they are a year old and/or 20+ pounds, I love this. Allows you to see your child through the rearview mirror. Some of them even entertain your baby with lights and songs.

• Active mat or baby crib mobile – If you get a crib mobile or pack n play, make sure it’s colorful and musical. The same goes for activity mats. Make sure the toys include mirrors and sounds.

LAUNDRY ESSENTIALS

I highly recommend all cotton. It is soft and can be washed in hot water for sterilization. Everything should be washed with a mild detergent such as Dreft before coming into contact with your child. During the first six months, wash baby clothes separately from other laundry. Baby bedding should ensure comfort and safety for your newborn. Use only good quality, breathable materials and avoid fluffy items until your child is able to remove things like blankets from their face.

• 3 elastic cotton sheets for the stroller and later for the crib

• 4 cotton blankets that can be used for swaddling

• 3 warmer blankets

• 2 pocket mattresses

• Plenty of burp cloths (cloth diapers) to use to wipe up drool and all kinds of messes

• 2 towels and hooded towels

BASIC CLOTHES

When it comes to baby clothes, it’s all about layers. One key thing to know is that babies can’t regulate their temperature very well until they are six months old. They overheat or get too cold very easily. It’s up to you to maintain the right temperature by layering your clothes and using blankets.

Think practicality and ease of dressing. Make sure the crotch opens easily when changing a diaper. We recommend soft and easy-to-change clothes as you will probably be changing your baby several times a day.

• 4-6 beds

• 5-7 one-piece garments

• 3-4 dresses/kimonos

• Comfortable clothes for 5-7 days

• 8-10 tank tops

• 3-4 bibs

• 4-5 pairs of socks or boots

• 3 cotton caps/hats

• 2 sweaters if it’s cold

• 1 snowsuit or fleece if it’s cold

Optional – Sleeping bag. They travel from Europe – they are a great way to keep baby warm at night without blankets that baby can kick off. It’s like a sleeping bag but has open arms for ventilation and a zipped bottom so changing is still easy.

BASIC NEEDS

• Diapers – Your child will go through about five thousand diapers before they are potty trained! And in the first days, you can change your baby up to 12 times a day. Whether you plan to use disposable, recycled, cloth, or diaper services, keep plenty on hand.

• Diaper wipes – I like the unscented ones for the first few months

• Diaper Bag – Get a nice durable bag with large pockets and make sure it always has:

• 4-5 diapers

• Diaper wipes

• Cloth diapers/ burp cloths to clean up spit ups and spills

• Bags for dirty diapers

• Diaper rash cream

• Antibacterial gel for cleaning hands

• Changing pad

• One change of clothes from head to toe

• Replacement pacifier

• 1 bib

• A few plush toys and rattles

• 1 bottle of water that can be used to craft a bottle

• 1 -2 bottles

• Formula

ESSENTIAL FOR FEEDING

• 2-4 nursing bras

• One box of disposable breast pads

• Nipple cream

• Either an electric breast pump or a manual breast pump

• Containers for storing breast milk

• A kit or bag for inserting milk bottles and ice packs

• At least 2 bottles

• A Good Support Book – I like “The Womanly Art Of Breastfeeding” by The La Leche League

ESSENTIAL FOR BOTTLE FEEDING AND PUMPING

• 6-8 slow flow or curved neck bottles with soft nipples

• Bottle brush and optional sanitizing system – It is important to wash the bottles thoroughly after each use and then disinfect the bottles at least every 2-3 months. If you are pumping, you will also want to sterilize the parts of the pump.

MORE BASICS

• Children’s thermometer

• Children’s soaps and lotions

• Shampoo without tears

• Bath toys

• Baby oil

• Ointment for diaper rash

• Vaseline

• Sterile cotton swabs

• Children’s scissors/nail clippers

• Baby brush/comb

• Alcohol

• Q-tips

• 3-4 pacifiers

• Syringe with nasal suction bulb – usually supplied by the hospital so be sure to bring this

• Hypoallergenic (no dyes) detergent that is gentle.

• Night light

• A few good parenting books – I like “Secrets Of The Baby Whisperer” by Tami Hoag and “The Happiest Baby On The Block” by Harvey Karp

Being prepared for your newborn will help you eliminate as much of the anxiety you may have about being a parent as possible so you can enjoy the process. It’s a lot easier to feel confident going home from the hospital when you know you have everything you need close at hand. Enjoy your new baby!
