Bird flu in the news
With disturbing news of the continued spread of bird flu and other human casualties,
there is growing concern that this disease caused by the bird flu virus
H5N1 could also spread to parts of the world not yet affected. Many people are
already endangered and many others potentially vulnerable, so here we focus on bird flu
and some natural prevention and treatment options.
What is a virus?
A virus is a tiny infectious agent consisting of a nucleic acid core with a protein
shell (or capsid), which is often multi-layered (covered) with fat. This capsid shell is
an impenetrable barrier to many herbs and medicines, including antibiotics, which are
therefore, it is not used against viral infections. Some herbs may penetrate or disintegrate
capsid and these are herbs that we refer to as antiviral herbs.
Effects of viruses
The effects of viruses on the body vary greatly. A cold, for example, is
an acute, short-term viral infection that usually produces mucus in the throat
and cavities. To take an example from the other extreme, it can produce the polio virus

Viral infections are usually manifested by symptoms such as fever, general aches, chills,
