It’s All About Discipline!
One of my favorite musical instruments is bagpipes. Many years ago, on a clear beautiful sunny day, my family and I heard a beautiful version of Amazing Grace played by a bagpiper on the shore as our family departed by boat from Halifax, Nova Scotia. We could still hear Amazing Grace as it drifted over 3 miles offshore.
On 22 August 2016, it was reported in newspapers around the world that the 61-year-old piper had died of “hypersensitivity pneumonitis – piper’s lung”. It was caused by bacteria from the “damp environment” in his pipes, which developed molds and fungi. For the previous seven years he had suffered from “shortness of breath, a dry cough” and could “only walk about 65 feet”.
Disinfecting every part of his bagpipes every day would have prevented his death. It’s all about discipline!

It all comes down to discipline. The discipline of preparation. Two of my friends are firefighters. They have firefighting equipment at the ready, so they are ready for a fire in minutes. He trains on fires in air pack gear to be ready within 90 seconds. Once you develop the discipline, it becomes part of you, a positive good habit.
A true disciple gives you the freedom to do your best and be your best self, allowing you to achieve success. For example: cleaning up after yourself and keeping the workplace tidy.
My husband and I went to a local restaurant to grab a quick lunch. A waitress we had never seen before brought our food and it took another 5 minutes to bring ketchup after our burgers were served. When she finally brought the ketchup, the burger was cold. Shortly after, we hurried back to work. The restaurant was almost empty and we had to look for a waitress to get the bill. That waitress won’t last long! He doesn’t have the discipline for the job!
In our lives, we need to be disciplined in both our mind and our body to avoid mental disorder and/or physical disorder.
Just like you brush your teeth twice a day to limit the bacteria that feed on your body and we bathe every day. This is all about our daily discipline.
As an 8-year-old child, I remember my violin teacher, Mr. William Whitson, teaching me to wash my hands with soap and water before playing the violin. After practice, Mr. Whitson taught me to wipe the violin with a clean cotton cloth to remove the rosin from all surfaces of the violin, including the strings, fingerboard, and bridge. Rosin is the pinesap from a tree that is rubbed in its pure state on the hair of a violin bow to grip the strings so they speak. Mr. Whitson also had me wipe the rosin off the wooden part of my bow. He wanted to protect the instrument from damage with sticky rosin. He taught each of his students the discipline to take care of their instruments. It’s all about discipline.
Many years ago, when I was a student in New York, I lent my violin to a friend while her instrument was being repaired. When she brought me the violin after a week, it was covered in sticky rosin! It took me several hours to clean my violin. My ex-girlfriend was not taught the discipline of taking care of her violin. She should have brought me my violin cleaner when I gave it to her!
I have been teaching my string students the discipline of instrument cleaning for over 30 years.
Part of discipline is teaching our children to wash their hands and dry them after using the bathroom. Harvard Medical School says, “In studies, washing your hands with soap and water for 30 seconds reduces the number of bacteria by almost 99.9%.” They also say, “Drying your hands well takes about 20 seconds if you’re using paper or cloth towels. It’s all about practice and discipline!

1) You have a large pile of papers on your desk. Organize papers, file information documents in the correct folders and pay bills according to the due date on them.
2) Immediately after cooking dinner, put pots and pans in the sink to soak with soap and warm water. This way you can clean up quickly and easily after a meal.
3) Eat one scoop of ice cream instead of two.
4) Stop smoking cigarettes for one day.
5) When you run out of certain foods in the fridge, write down all the food you need on a piece of paper. Then take your list to the grocery store.
Remember that discipline means sticking to a goal you have and not making excuses for not completing a task. Don’t procrastinate. To be disciplined, you have to take the first step. Just don’t talk about it. Do it. Take your first step. Then take the second step and keep going until you finish what you started.
It’s all about discipline!
