Ear Infection Cure – Vitamins and Minerals

One of the quickest cures for an ear infection is to add some supplemental nutrients to your diet. Vitamins and minerals can help boost your immunity, relieve symptoms, and prevent the infection from recurring. I give vitamins and minerals to all my patients with ear problems with good results.

Here is a summary of the nutrients I use with my patients:

Treatment of ear infection 1: Vitamin C

I recommend that my adult patients start with at least 3000 – 5000 mg of vitamin C per day to avoid infection. For small children (up to 2 years), 1000 mg per day is sufficient. For older children, about 2000 mg works well.

Each person’s vitamin C needs are unique, so I recommend starting with 500 mg of vitamin C every hour until your stool becomes a little watery or runny. When your stool is loose, it means your body is saturated with vitamin C. Any excess is excreted in the urine and stool. This point is called “intestinal tolerance” and is when vitamin C is most effective in helping your immune system.

It should be followed every day until the infection is eliminated from your body. Depending on the severity of the infection, this can take a few days to a week or more. If your vitamin C intake is too low, you may not see an improvement in your symptoms.

Ear Infection Treatment 2: Zinc

Zinc stimulates your white blood cells and the production of antibodies to fight infections. This mineral is also a powerful anti-inflammatory that helps relieve the pain of sore ears, sore throats, and swollen glands that are often present with ear problems.

For adults, I recommend starting with 60 – 90 mg of elemental zinc per day. I take 30 mg a day for small children, 60 mg a day for older children. If you also have a sore throat, dissolve a zinc lozenge in your mouth. A sore throat clears up faster when it has direct contact with zinc

Ear Infection Cure 3: Vitamin A

Vitamin A and its precursor beta-carotene strengthen immunity. Vitamin A has been shown to reduce infection rates.

For immune support, I recommend 10,000 IU of vitamin A or 15 mg of beta-carotene daily. About 2,500 IU per day is sufficient for small children and 5,000 IU per day for older children.

Vitamin A should not be taken in large amounts by pregnant women, as higher amounts are associated with an increased risk of birth defects.

Other nutrients

Optional but recommended nutrients that I also dispense to my patients are vitamin E, selenium and B complex.

Ear Infection Cure 4: Vitamin E

Vitamin E supports immune function and is a powerful antioxidant. It is beneficial against both bacteria and viruses. I recommend at least 200mg per day. If you have high blood pressure, consult your doctor first.

Ear Infection Treatment 5: Selenium

Selenium is great to take with vitamin E as they enhance each other’s absorption. It is a good immune booster. For adults, take 100 mg daily.

Ear Infection Cure 6: B Complex

A balanced B complex is recommended to repair the nerves in the ears. B vitamins will also help you cope with stress and fatigue. 25-50 mg of B complex daily is a good start.
