Belly Button Ring Basics – How to Care for a New Navel Piercing

You dove into it, biting your lip and bracing yourself for the pain. Moments later you had a shiny new piece of jewelry glittering from your belly button. You got your belly button pierced and now you’re ready to get on with your life and show it off club or pool side. Unfortunately, there is one problem. It’s red, it hurts, and it’s so swollen. It’s not quite ready for its debut, but don’t worry, it’s only a few days old. To get the most out of your new piercing, it’s important to take care of it. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be looking sexy and showing off your new belly in no time.

New navel piercing care:

  • Keep it clean:

It is important to keep all piercings clean and the belly button is no exception. Your belly button, even if it is often covered by clothing, can still collect bacteria. Clean your belly button piercing twice a day to keep it free of bacteria. Make sure you use an antibacterial soap to rid the area of any harmful bacteria that can cause an infection. While brushing twice a day is a good rule of thumb, you may find that your lifestyle calls for a little more brushing. If you participate in any of the following activities or activities similar to these, be sure to clean your piercing after you’re done:

    • Spend time in the hot tub or pool
    • Strengthening
    • Participation in sexual activities
    • Participation in work-intensive activities. Pretty
    • Working in the kitchen
  • Use a sea salt dip:

The belly button healing process can be extremely long (6 to 12 months), but you can help speed up the healing process by soaking the area in a mixture of sea salts and distilled water. You can buy pre-made dips that many piercing shops offer, or you can make your own in a pinch using sea salt and distilled water. Use this soak 3 to 4 times a day for 5 to 10 minutes. Continue like this until the piercing is healed.

(Note: Professional piercers recommend using a mixture of sea salt and water that is close to what your body has. Take a gallon jug of water and add sea salt until you can taste it. Add a little at a time until the taste of the salt is obvious. Remember keep track of how much salt you add so that you can prepare the mixture again if necessary.)

  • Try not to touch:

It’s new and exciting, and there’s something inside you that makes you want to touch your new belly button piercing. Unfortunately, this is one urge that should remain unsatisfied. The more you touch your piercing, the more you irritate it and the more likely you are to transfer harmful bacteria from your hands to your sensitive belly button. If you must touch it, remember to wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap.

  • Ask an expert:

Some pain, discomfort, blood and discharge is normal with new piercings; however, if you’re experiencing any or all of these things in addition, don’t hesitate to call or see your piercer right away. If you feel like something is wrong, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

4 things to avoid

  • Never use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide: When you look down and see a red or irritated piercing, you may be tempted to run to the medicine cabinet for a solution. While alcohol and hydrogen peroxide can work in other situations, when used on a new piercing, they can actually do more harm than good. Both substances are harsh and can seriously dry out your skin, prolong healing time, or increase the risk of scarring.
  • Never use healing ointments to speed healing: An ointment like Neosporin is great for cuts or scrapes, but can be counterproductive when it comes to piercings. Your piercing needs oxygen to heal and these ointments create a protective barrier between your skin and the air. Without oxygen, your healing will slow down. Plus, overtime, a petroleum-based gel can prevent sea salt from reaching your skin.
  • Avoid tight clothing around your new piercing: A new piercing is sensitive and a new belly button piercing happens to be in a very bad place when it comes to healing. Even if you love your tight jeans and skirts, try to give your belly button room to breathe. Clothing that is tight will cause friction. Too much friction can cause a world of problems, the least of which is prolonging healing time and the worst of which is infection and/or rejection of the piercing.
  • Never ignore a problem: If you think there is a problem, address it immediately. Waiting will only have negative consequences including full infection, scarring and rejection or removal of the piercing.
