Craft Project – How To Make A No-Sew Fleece Scarf
My daughter and I just love the soft and cozy feel of a fleece scarf around our necks on a cold winter day, so we decided to make our own. You can choose any color or print of the fleece fabric with which you will make scarves and match it with winter jackets or winter overalls.
We went to our local fabric store and were amazed at all the beautiful colors and prints that fleece fabric has to offer these days. We chose an anti-pilling fleece for our project so we don’t have to worry about it piling up when washing and drying. If you live in a very cold climate, you can double the fabric by sewing the two pieces together before making the fringe.
The instructions for this project are for an adult scarf, but you can easily shorten the length and width to make it for a child. These scarves make very nice gifts when you need to squeeze out a handmade gift quickly, such as during the holidays.
Supplies you will need:
1 yard of soft anti-pilling fleece
straight pins
fabric scissors
long measuring tape
(optional) quilting rotary cutter and cutting mat
Note: Cutting fleece is much easier if you use a rotary cutter and a cutting mat, but…you can also use a tape measure and sharp fabric scissors.
Step 1: Unfold your fleece fabric and cut it to the size you need. You will need a piece that measures 64″ to 68″ in length and 8″ in width to fit an adult. If you are making this for a child, you can adjust the size of the fabric to fit your needs.
Step 2: Measure 5″ from each short edge and place straight pins in a horizontal line into your fabric. I do this so I know how long to cut the fringe. Using sharp fabric scissors, cut the fringe to measure approximately 1″ wide by 5″ on length.Remove all straight pins.
You can leave the fringes plain or you can tie them together, the choice is yours. If you have access to a sewing machine, you can simply sew a few matching pockets on each end of the scarf so they can be used as hand warmers. Your scarf is machine washable and dryable, no special care required.
