Bullying – Twenty Basic Traits of the Subtle and Not-So-Subtle Serial Forms of It

Much information about bullying is available on the Internet today. Yet, while current school systems, workplaces, and large organizations have done much to prevent and control bullying, many people still don’t know what bullying really is, or recognize its subtle forms when they see it. To better understand all types of bullying, here are 20 of its basic characteristics that can be found in several articles and studies.

1. Predatory. Serial bullying is predatory and sociopathic. This kind of bullying generally has a dysfunctional, malicious, psychiatric, cowardly component to its psyche.

2. Incurable. One in 30 people is a serial bully (1% of the population). Most are incurable.

3. Hazardous. Truly dangerous serial bullying generally occurs in two stages:

  • First. The target is violently controlled and subdued through isolation, manipulation, name-calling, backstabbing, criticism, demeaning rumors, and direct or indirect coercion.
  • Second. The target is confronted, wounded, destroyed, or eliminated in some way, often socially. This stage often occurs because the bully has consciously gone too far with their behavior and feels the need to cover it up as much as possible.

4. Effects No always recognizable by others. Among adults, many people do not recognize highly subtle or indirect bullying as it occurs. For example, an adult may see that a friend or colleague has become quiet and withdrawn, but does not realize that the friend or colleague is being abused by some kind of bullying somewhere.

5. Cautious types. In some cases, the persons themselves do not know that they are being bullied for a long time, because the bullying takes place slowly and carefully behind their backs in the form of preconceived judgments and stereotypes. This means that the so-called target or “frog” is cooked slowly, so that it does not jump out of the hot water before it is too late. This type of bullying can be highly organized if several types of bullying work together to target. In fact, this kind could be called systematic bullying if it is intended to harm the target.

6. Bullying vs Harassment. Bullying and harassment are similar but not exactly the same. Bullying refers to the behavior itself at any age. It can be long term and destructive to the target. Harassment can also be destructive. However, harassment is often a one-time incident, depending on the target’s tolerance level. Harassment affects the civil and legal rights of the targets involved.

7. He loses one, he finds the other. When a serial bully loses a target or victim, they find a new one within two weeks. Serial bullies need a target, a scapegoat, or a full-time whipping boy.

8. Can be male or female. Male and female bullies occur in almost 50/50 percent. Nevertheless, according to the statements, women are harassed more often. Men may not admit to them.

9. Masculine or feminine features. Male abusers can be loud, downright violent, stomping, arrogant, and intimidating. Women can be quietly subtle, indirectly violent, or coercive and intimidating. Still other bullies can be fake, sneaky, and mocking, often faking their own persecution to gain power over their targets.

10. Uneducated. Some abusers may not like things of a higher order. In particular, they may dislike enlightenment, trust, faith, courage, reciprocity, integrity, true cooperation or teamwork, honesty, innovation, precise thinking, abilities and talents, competition, or the rights of others.

11. Selective. Bullies don’t bully everyone. They will only bully their chosen targets for their own selective reasons. This characteristic makes bullies difficult to detect and control because they behave normally around most people and in public. Domestic bullying of spouses falls into this category.

12. Children’s types. Young (child) bullies choose their targets differently than adult bullies. For example, a child bully may hit on someone for mere emotional attention or for momentary dominance. Adults may compete for status, pay, and authority.

13. Criminally convicted. Child abusers who have been in the habit for a relatively solitary time will be convicted of a crime when they turn 30.

14. He craves mental and emotional control. Bullies often focus on controlling or owning their target mentally and emotionally through fear and other tactics. They can deal with a single ability or vulnerability of the target. For example, a bully may target someone simply out of jealousy because of their good looks, social skills, or talent, especially if those targets have difficulty standing up for themselves.

15. inno projected needs. Bullies have distinct inner traits. For example, they tend to project their unsatisfied inner needs onto others, or transfer them onto others in a similar way.

16. Versatile and smart. Smart thugs can prove multi-faceted chameleon personalities, able to play issues both ways, play the few against the middle, and change their stories frequently. They also know how to tap into the darker, more fearful side of bystanders to enlist their help for bullying purposes.

17. Braggarts. Bullies tend to brag. They claim achievements, deals, relationships and possessions that do not exist and probably never existed.

18. Great job resumes. Within the adult workforce, bullies often have glowing resumes, which is the only way their previous employers could get rid of them.

19. Disturbing. Bullies disrupt organizations by creating ill will, bad feelings, and misunderstandings. They can foster layers of tangled webs through deception and false pretenses, ultimately leading to unethical or criminal activity through their organizations. Businesses were destroyed by not being able to do anything about a key bully. In one case, a guitar manufacturer had to watch his business go bankrupt and go out of business before the owner could regain control of it. This owner was lucky to get it running again.

20. Not stupid. Habitual or serial bullies are not stupid. They simply have trouble understanding that their actions are unethical or illegal, or they know that their mean self-aggrandizing actions are not appreciated or respected by others. These types of bullies think it is normal behavior to take whatever they want from whoever they want (who have been carefully selected first) whenever they want without having to face any consequences.
