The Best Donuts on the Planet!
Remember the old commercial with the guy who had to get up early in the morning to make donuts?… He kept saying “I have to make donuts”… he was an advertising icon. Fiction… I don’t think so… he actually exists (and looks a bit like an actor in real life)… but he doesn’t work for the major chain that made the saying famous… he’s a Greek immigrant, an entrepreneur named George Vlandis, the owner of Coffee An Donuts in Westport CT.
Together with his wife, son Elias and daughter Stacey, George owns Coffee An, a local donut shop in Westport Connecticut (USA). Coffee An has become a national and now an international destination for one thing…doughnuts…arguably the best on the plant!
Coffee An Donuts are amazing, unlike any donuts or muffins you’d find anywhere (when you see my photo you’ll see I enjoyed a few – way too much :). They are large, moist and fragrant. The bakery case comes in about a dozen varieties, from plain to coconut coated to my favorite…chocolate coated. If you’re there and they’re not busy (which is rare), ask for Andy or Mike (two of the few non-family members who work the counter, remember everyone’s name, know what’s going on in the world, and always have a friendly smile) , to make you my special donut, a hot chocolate glazed donut—the most sinful pleasure one can have.
When you arrive, don’t expect to be “blown away” by the glitzy, modern vibe you usually expect in an overgrown community like Westport, but expect to be touched by its charm. The small 5-store front in a nondescript strip mall features photos of George and his family meeting President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore, in addition to senators, congressmen, celebrities and local officials. The counter has 12 stools and the seating area has 6 small tables lining the front door. Everyone is conversing, across the counters and at the tables…it’s a very social and friendly atmosphere. It’s a meeting place for business meetings and moms…both find great food and a nice atmosphere.
On the other wall is the menu, specials and a public bulletin board with business cards and flyers from local businesses that know it’s the epicenter of all networking. If you want to know what’s happening around town or in the news nationally, Coffee An has the 411.
A few years ago we renovated our home and I started going to Coffee An for breakfast and lunch almost every day since we didn’t have a kitchen for a while. I have become a “regular” there, I meet other regulars and become friends with many of them. This is where construction workers and hedge fund managers all sit at the counter and talk on the same level. There are families that send their Christmas cards that the kids put up on their wall along with the drawing on the back of the place mat…the crayons come in a Crayola tin that must be 20 years old.
Every morning, except for the 2 weeks in July when George and the family are on vacation (good for them, bad for everyone else…), the family gets up early to make sure the donuts and muffins are fresh every day. Coffee An only serves breakfast and lunch, so you have to get there by 3pm or you’ll miss out. Whatever is left over at the end of each day is donated to the local men’s shelter… my opinion, I think they make sure there is always something left over every day!
On weekend mornings, the line is out the door until 11:00 and people line up to return the sinful joys to their family and friends. We have friends who come from out of town who are just as excited to have Coffee An donuts as they are to visit us…but then maybe the donuts are the reason they come to us….? Anyone who has ever been to Westport in the last 20 years; he knows about a small donut shop called Coffee An.
So, if you’re on the East Coast, New York, or Boston, and want to say you’ve had the best donuts on the planet…it’s worth a trip to Westport, CT and a visit to this little donut shop. they know you’ve heard about it online…and that you’re visiting from far away, George and his family will feel right at home…
