Puppy Behavior 16 – 19 Weeks Old

There are many changes that a puppy can go through during puppy development. In this article we will list and describe some of the changes in your puppy’s behavior from 16 weeks to 19 weeks of age.

At this point in your puppy’s development, you need to be vigilant and remember that this is the point where he is actually an angry teenager. You may have thought that you have seen all possible behavior problems in the earlier stages of your puppy’s life, but if you do not keep your puppy under close supervision, you may start to see signs of other problems.

Behavior of puppies – 16 – 19 weeks

A step-by-step guide to what you should expect

  • Your puppy can show different sides of his personality. One minute he might be nice and polite and the next minute he might be pretty dismissive and ignoring your training commands
  • Your puppy is exhibiting the common traits of a teenager because he believes he is grown up and mature – but in reality he is still just a baby.
  • You may see your puppy exhibit nervous behavior, aggression, and dominance issues.
  • Depending on the breed of your dog – a genetic predisposition may start to show – do some research on the breed you have.
  • Watch out for any scary behavior. You can see your puppy running away from what it perceives as scary. Of course you should protect him from any real danger – but don’t be too protective. If you constantly pick him up – he begins to believe that he has a reason to be afraid – by picking up the puppy and petting him, you reinforce his negative reaction.
  • Even if your puppy acts like a teenager, he will start to socialize with you and other family members.
  • Your puppy may start chewing things around the house – basically challenging any authority.
  • Expect your puppy’s behavior to really test you. You may start to see trouble training your puppy who has accidents around the house.
  • Watch out for anxiety-related issues – barking, separation anxiety and barking can occur at this stage of your puppy’s life.
  • You may even see food aggression. If you have a well trained puppy – you should be able to pick up the puppy’s food, sleep in the puppy’s litter box and anything else that proves your position in the pack without your puppy shows any aggression.
  • Continue to be consistent in all aspects of your training program.
  • You should start training the puppy on basic commands – you will need to start letting him off the leash soon.
  • Some people feel that puppy training classes are admitting failure. This is far from the truth as they are a great way to ask other owners questions, gain access to a dog trainer and socialize your pup with other dogs of different breeds, sexes and sizes.
  • Your puppy should be dewormed again during this period,
  • It is important that your puppy is also checked for fleas.
  • Expect some of your puppy’s teeth to fall out – don’t panic, they are baby teeth and will soon be replaced by adult teeth.

Puppy behavior 16 – 19 weeks – Watch out for separation anxiety or excessive attachment.

  • It is important that you train your puppy to get used to you not being around – this will help with any separation anxiety or over attachment issues – Start by leaving your puppy alone for 15 minutes or even ignoring him.
  • Get the puppy used to being left alone for a period of time (but put him in his crate.)
  • It is important that your puppy does not associate leaving the house, i.e. when you go to work, with always being away from the house for long periods of time.
  • Leave the house at regular times throughout the day – so your puppy doesn’t associate leaving the house with being left alone for long periods of time.
  • Don’t make a big deal out of leaving the House, i.e. don’t get him really excited or jingle the car keys. Make it a fact and just walk away.
