Luck Or Life – When Bad Things Happen to Good People
Ernest Hemingway once said, “The world breaks everyone. And then many are strong in broken places.”
When we go through adversity, it’s not always possible to believe that everyone suffers from loss and heartache. It feels and acts very personally when bad luck and bad life experiences happen to good people.
Our first response is “Why me?” We may wonder if we did something to deserve this punishment or trouble. We may feel resentful of others who do not suffer and wonder why trouble did not choose them. We can even add up all the bad, selfish, and dishonest things that a certain friend or acquaintance has done, and yet he has good health and a large bank account.
It is not fair
Life is not fair. As a mother of six children, I tried very hard at Christmas to make sure that everyone got presents. No matter how many times I counted and then made lists and then told, on Christmas morning during the bed of presents, paper and toys, I realized that it wasn’t fair. Someone got a watch worth twenty dollars and someone got a bracelet worth three dollars. Someone got the exact doll she wanted, and someone else got the one that was all the rage last year.
We finally decided to admit and joke that no matter what we did, it would never work. But the joy was knowing that the odds were good that one day it would be your turn to get exactly what you wanted. We have often recited the battle cry of large families and preschools around the world; “You get what you get and you won’t have a seizure.”
Happiness or life
Life is full of happiness and also full of changes and coincidences. As Ernest Hemingway once said, we all break in some way and it is the broken places that make us strong.
Bad luck is described as an unforeseen event, chance, yet luck is described as prosperity, wealth, unexpected success, advantage, gain and triumph, happiness and blessing. It is often luck that opportunities for growth and development come our way. When we take opportunities to grow through loss, grief, and adversity, we become stronger and more resilient. I know this to be true because I have experienced it in my own life and in the lives of countless friends and family.
