Sit Stay Fetch Review
Sit Stay Fetch is one of the most popular dog training products on the internet, and for good reason. The 186-page book is divided into different sections, each covering a different aspect of dog ownership. Each section is divided into 5 or 6 subsections and an overview of that section. The review is especially nice because it condenses the important aspects of each section into one page for easy reference. That’s not to say that skipping to the end of each section is the best way to use this book. Each section contains a wealth of information as well as case studies for specific dog problems (aggression, barking, chewing, jumping on furniture, jumping on people, etc.)
The introductory chapters are mainly for people who are considering a dog or have recently acquired a puppy. These chapters focus on aspects such as breed selection, responsible ownership, dog growth stages and choosing your vet. In the third chapter, the training of the dog begins. Types of training are outlined as well as some secrets of dog training. Crate training is also discussed in this area. For people who already have dogs, the first three chapters don’t really provide much relevant information; however, for someone looking to get a dog, these chapters are invaluable.
Chapter four provides insight into how dogs use their senses and how their body language gives insight into their feelings and attitudes. I found it interesting that dogs can be very expressive and their moods are often overlooked by owners. This chapter also describes how dogs communicate with each other, as well as the similarities between wolves and dogs.
Of the remaining chapters, two are devoted to dog problems, two to teaching commands, and one to the positives and negatives of dog whispering. The two problem chapters are two of the longest chapters in the book. The first chapter on dog problems deals with behaviors such as aggression, biting, chewing, kicking and barking. Case studies are presented with many problems that show why a dog may exhibit these problems. The second chapter on dog problems deals with allergies, fleas, chasing cars and jumping on people. For each part, relevant examples are given to further illustrate the given issue.
The chapters dealing with dog commands are divided into basic or starter commands and advanced commands. Some of the basic commands include “Come”, “Sit”, “Down”, “Fall” and “Stand”. These commands are provided in an easy-to-follow method and can be implemented fairly quickly with a little practice. I liked that there is a training plan to help train the dog. The Advanced Commands section covers the ‘Snap’, ‘Load’, ‘Shake’ and ‘Flip’ functions. In my experience, some of these commands are more difficult to train a dog than others, and it is not recommended that teaching these commands begin until the dog is 6 months old and has mastered the basic commands from the previous chapter.
Sit Stay Fetch is a good product that touches on many overlooked aspects of dog ownership. Some less common problems are also discussed and recommendations are given on how to solve these problems. I found this book to be laid out in a logical way, with the training aspects taking up most of the pages, but other areas such as body language and sense are also adequately covered. The author also does a good job of supporting the product by providing a free newsletter that includes additional tips for dealing with dog problems. Granted, you don’t need to read every chapter to address a specific problem, but it’s nice to see that almost every common dog problem is addressed.
I give Sit Stay Fetch Two Paws Up!!!
