Chiropractic and Infertility
Many different clinical case studies have highlighted the benefits and great results of chiropractic therapy in patients who have been unproductive in their efforts to have children. While chiropractic care is not a direct treatment for infertility, it can help improve homeostasis and physiological adjustment, allowing the body to have a better level of health.
Three consecutive issues of the peer-reviewed Journal of Verebral Subluxation Research (JVSR) have published case studies of women struggling with infertility who chose to use chiropractic rehabilitation. It has shown a strong connection between the use of chiropractic therapy and the resolution of infertility. In the following cases, chiropractic care was initiated and the results recorded and published.
In the December 8, 2003 issue of JVSR, a case study involving a 32-year-old woman whose infertility was explained. From August 1999, she tried to get pregnant. She had previously tried various conventional medical procedures such as Clomid, a fertility drug, artificial insemination, detailed fertility testing and in vitro fertilization. She sought chiropractic therapy on November 3, 2001 without success. A chiropractic examination and rehabilitation was carried out over the next six weeks. At this time, the patient’s other concerns of headache and lower back pain improved dramatically. In addition, the patient’s estrogen levels, endometrial thickness, and cervical mucus levels also improved compared to when the patient’s fertility specialists attempted her first IVF. A second IVF was performed on February 17, 2002, and the patient had a positive pregnancy test on March 2, 2002.
Another case was a 34-year-old woman who sought chiropractic therapy on January 10, 2000. She had various conditions that included a history of infertility. Apart from starting chiropractic rehabilitation, the patient made no changes in her clinical condition and lifestyle. After 4-5 weeks of chiropractic care, the patient became pregnant naturally.
The last case involved a 65-year-old woman with severe lumbar degeneration and low back pain. It’s fascinating because she wasn’t trying to get pregnant. When she was 13, she had an accidental fall that caused her period to stop completely at 18. She was then diagnosed as infertile. It was interesting to note that after four weeks of chiropractic care, she began to soil again and was diagnosed with regular periods.
In these clinical trials, chiropractic care was used specifically to improve vertebral subluxations that were proven to interfere with the normal functioning of the nervous system. Subluxations led to disruption of the patients’ reproductive system. Studies have shown that women who have had infertility problems have had an obvious interference in their nervous system as seen by the occurrence of subluxations.
Studies have also noted the huge cost of fertility treatment options used by many couples. The range of expenses can range from a few hundred to impractical thousands. Studies also observe that there is evidence of long-term risks associated with in vitro fertilization. Research published online in the American Journal of Human Genetics (November 2002) states that “children conceived through in vitro fertilization may be at increased risk of a rare genetic disorder that predisposes them to cancer.”
According to the author, Elizabeth Anderson-Peacock, DC, DICCP, “Although chiropractic care is not a cure for infertility, it is believed that improving the neural integrity of the spine through specific chiropractic adjustments may have contributed to improved homeostasis and physiological adaptation, allowing the body to express a higher level of health as a result .” In short, these studies state that: “The human structure is naturally healthy and reproducible. Damage to this ability marks a base level malfunction. Spinal subluxation and dysfunction in the nervous system can interfere with the normal functioning of human systems.”
