A Guide to Extracting Sap From a Maple Tree
How can you deny the rich, luscious and deep flavor of fresh maple syrup? You can cook with it, bake with it, make candies with it and even decorate your pancakes with it! Maple syrup has been around for thousands of years and is still a highly sought after treat.
This is perhaps why so many people are wondering how to extract their own sap from maple trees to make their own delicious maple syrup. If you’re one of those people, read on to learn what you’ll need, what to expect, and some tips for getting the best results when it comes to extracting sap from maple trees.
What will I need?
To get started, you’ll need a clean 5-gallon bucket with a lid, a tree tap or “spile,” a power drill, a 7/16 drill bit, a hammer or mallet, some rope or twine, and some masking tape. If you don’t have an electric drill, you can use an auger instead. You can purchase all of these materials and many others related to sap extraction at any local home improvement or gardening store.
Here are some important tips:
Most trees produce sap, but only some species produce sap that tastes really good. If you’re craving maple syrup, stick with sugar maple or red maple.
Do not use a copper tree. Copper can be toxic to trees and plants.
The trees produce sap throughout the year, but the best times for extraction are between February and March and between September and November.
Tapping trees when outside temperatures average around 40 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and no less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit during the night.
Wait until the maples are at least a foot in diameter before tapping them. A tree of this size is around 40 years old.
If the sap is flowing well, you will need to check the container several times a day to make sure it does not overflow unless you use a larger bucket. A 5 gallon bucket will probably require one check per day.
How to tap a tree:
1. Mark your drill bit at 2 ½ inches with tape. You just want to drill into a tree.
2. Find the side of the tree that faces southeast.
3. Drill the hole at an angle up the edge, 2 ½ inches into the tree.
4. Use string or rope to tie your bucket to the tree under the faucet.
5. Clean the remaining bark in the hole and insert a log or tap.
6. Use a rubber mallet or hammer to tap the pin into the hole.
7. Collect sap every day.
8. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
