Who Is the Face of the Gerber Baby?
There has always been speculation about who the face of the Gerber baby is. Some people still think it’s Humprey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor or Ernest Borgnine as a baby. Bad news for them, because none of the aforementioned celebrities appear on Gerber baby food jars. But then who is it? Who is the mysterious little child?
The story goes back to 1928 when the Gerber Products Company – formerly the Fermont Canning Company owned and operated by Frank Daniel Gerber and his son Daniel Frank Gerber – began manufacturing Gerber baby food. They wanted to find a baby face to represent their company and organized a competition that same year.
As expected, they received hundreds of paintings, drawings and sketches. Surprise, surprise – they didn’t have digital cameras back then. The winner was Dorothy Hope Smith of New England, who submitted an unfinished charcoal drawing – or rather a sketch of a child who had disheveled hair, big blue eyes and round lips. She told the judges that if her sketch won the competition, she would finish it professionally. It wasn’t needed because the judges liked it the way it was. It was exactly what they were looking for; healthy and beautiful baby face.
And who was the child? Well, her name is Ann Turner (the cook) and she was a five month old baby at the time. It is the most famous baby in the world, because in a very short time – in about 60 days – the Gerber baby symbol gained national recognition; a little later and international. From 1928, her face appeared on every single Gerber product and in advertising, and in 1931 it became the company’s official trademark.
By the way, she is a retired English teacher and lives in Florida. She raised four children and became a mystery writer. Her books include Trace Their Shadows, Shadow over Cedar Key, and Homosassa Shadows. In 1951, she received a one-time cash settlement ($5,000) from the company, and Dorothy Hope Smith received $300 for the rights to her drawing, but neither was paid royalties for the famous painting.
