Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment of Multiple Myeloma
Multiple myeloma, which is also known as myeloma or Kahler’s disease, is a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow. In this condition, abnormal plasma cells multiply in the bone marrow, causing destructive bone damage and producing an abnormal protein known as a monoclonal antibody or M protein. Normal plasma cells produce different antibodies against infections the body is exposed to. Anemia, fatigue, weight loss and weakness, unexplained fever, bleeding, bone pain and bone tenderness, hypercalcemia, fractures, kidney disease, nerve pain, enlarged tongue, skin lesions, and increased susceptibility to infection are the common symptoms of this condition. . .
While the exact cause of multiple myeloma remains unknown, exposure to chemicals, radiation and viruses. immune disorders; and a family or genetic history, may cause or trigger the disease. This condition usually occurs in middle and old age and can be diagnosed with a thorough medical history, physical examination, along with multiple blood and urine tests, x-rays, and bone marrow tests.
With treatment, this condition has an average survival of about three years. However, there can be wide variations, depending on the severity of the disease, the patient’s immune status and the response to treatment. Although there is currently no cure for this disease, prolonged remission can be achieved using a combination of treatments that include immunomodulators, radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell transplantation, blood transfusions, and plasmapheresis. The prognosis for the disease can be assessed by grading it, usually in 3 stages, based on severity at diagnosis.
In this scenario, Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be used along with modern treatment in order to bring about complete remission of the disease and prevent a relapse. Herbal medicines are given to neutralize and remove malignant plasma cells and to help the bone marrow produce normal blood precursors. Abnormal protein deposition causes damage to various organs. Kidney damage can be completely reversed if treated with herbs in early detection. Nerve damage and neuropathy must be treated with herbal medicines that act on the central nervous system as well as peripheral nerve endings. Anemia, abnormal bleeding and skin rashes should be treated with herbs that act on the blood tissue.
Other herbs are added to help treat bone pain, reduce the crowding of plasma cells in the bones, prevent fractures, and heal bone damage. Severe bone pain is a typical feature of advanced disease and extremely aggressive treatment is required to manage this. Sometimes, a special Ayurvedic Panchkarma procedure known as Tikta-Ksheer basti is needed. This includes several enemas of medicated oils and medicated milk to help relieve bone damage.
Immune regulation is an important part of the treatment and Ayurvedic herbal mineral medicines known as Rasayanas are used for this purpose in order to reverse most of the symptoms and signs of this condition in the long term. A multifaceted Rasayana is chosen that can regulate blood and bone marrow metabolism, regulate immunity, reverse weakness and weight loss, and cure anemia and low-grade fever. Care is taken to ensure that these drugs are well tolerated by the patient and do not have adverse effects on important body organs such as the kidneys, liver and heart.
After remission is achieved, it is important to gradually taper the treatment to avoid relapse, while monitoring with periodic blood and urine tests. With the simultaneous use of modern and Ayurvedic treatment, most patients with multiple myeloma can achieve remission within 12 to 18 months. Low-dose medication and monitoring should be continued for at least 5 years to ensure no recurrence.
Ayurvedic herbal therapy can therefore be judiciously used in conjunction with modern therapy for the successful management and treatment of multiple myeloma.
